What is the retirement plan like at Seaspan ULC?

Pros

Bi-weekly direct deposit cheques, and good pension contributions.

Cons

Where do I begin! What was most amazing was the undisguised contempt the middle managers felt for their staff. None of it was warranted. The effect this had on the staff was pure poison, and I’ve never worked in another environment with such low morale. The managers would also pick soft targets from the staff to intimidate on a routine basis just for kicks. I also saw lower managers being promoted despite being hopelessly incompetent in their original roles. If you’re an entry level employee, get comfortable, because no matter how hard you work, it will never be recognized, and you are going nowhere soon...unless you choose to quit. Most employees are just putting in their time quietly and joylessly hoping to make it to their retirement. Lots of narcissists in management looking down their noses at you, but just barely able to successfully do their own jobs. I was lucky not to get stuck with this employer for very long.

How are the career development opportunities at Seaspan ULC?

Pros

Good pay and benefit. Better work life balance.

Cons

No proper cadence for employee development, reward and recognition. Almost more managers than employees. Seaspan management is predominantly comprised of British, Americans and Australians. There is not 1 member of a visible minority in middle or senior management. The management does not look anything like Canada and Canadians.

Advice to Management

Scrub the work force and eliminate redundancy. The current set up is not sustainable. For example, there is a Director of Detail Design and there is another director of Detail Design-build. Too many duplicated and redundant portfolios with no added value.

No proper cadence for employee development, reward and recognition.
