Does River Island Clothing have a pension plan?

Pros

- Competitive pay; - 50% staff discount (but if you buy online you still pay full price and then get refunded on payday); - Nice pension matching - Up to 7.5%; - I haven't been bothered by anyone after work hours or expected to stay late; - Subsidised canteen (Hanger Lane office only); - I've felt under the weather and decided to work from home and that didn't seem to have been a problem (Your experience may vary, though); - You'll be using interesting tech if you're a microservices engineer in *some* teams (Go, K8s, etc)

Cons

- 3 month, non-negotiable notice period due to high employee turnover (I assume); - No probationary period - Once you're in, you're in. I put this as a con because if you don't like it, you *may* be in it 3 months; - The engineering team is treated as an IT consultancy by the business, so be ready for what typically bad comes along with that (got to keep the "stakeholders" happy!); - You're likely (as an engineer) to spend a lot of your time in business meetings rather than developing yourself technically (writing code, design, etc); - Teams don't seem to be empowered to do things, rather the calls come from the higher-ups; - Team ownership seems non-existent, apart from when stuff breaks; - Software architects, which design projects and take tech decisions for them as well. Usually, they choose managed services from AWS so your job as a Software Engineer is to implement what they tell you to and write glue code between managed services and business logic, which makes your work feel not impactful, underwhelming and uninteresting, in my opinion - You're not working on solving problems, you're just a code monkey; - Engineering culture seems to be non-existent; - You might be expected to work in both Shoreditch and Hanger Lane offices; - Everything bad you'd expect from your typical corporate culture; - In the Shoreditch office, there's seemingly absolutely no food provided to you - there is a ziptap and a coffee machine; - Working hours are 9:30 am to 5:30 pm and they don't seem flexible; - Lunch break is 30 minutes long; - My interview process was not very good - They didn't outline key pieces of information that I described above, such as the fact that I'd be expected to be in different offices during the week and what I'd be working on, and they consistently oversold (imo) the position and the culture/environment. In conclusion, I found all of these out by myself and wrote them here so you don't have to. If you're a person that doesn't like process, BS or politics, maybe take a miss on this one.

Advice to Management

If you want true talent and low employee turnover in this area, start by improving the software building process. - Take the power out of the business-people and put it onto the software engineers; - Stop with the scrum BS - It's completely unnecessary; - Foster good engineering practices; - Hire good, caring managers; Basically, care about your engineering division and don't treat them as a consultancy you can use to create your software.

- Nice pension matching - Up to 7.5%;

Pension and Discount Country stores are often forgotten about and progression is virtually impossible Recognition is not pay related and reviews are discontinued High Expectations for staff with no real recognition - Boss's Bounty is not sufficient for numerous staff in one month

Does River Island Clothing offer employee discounts?

Pros

The employee discount is good for a sales advisor at 40% and during the peak times in summer or Christmas there is lots of overtime going. All the staff members are lovely to work with and there is possibilities for career progression. Good for student or anyone looking for part time work.

Cons

There is very little recognition for the work you do especially when you take on jobs outside the basic job role. I currently do the job of a level 2 on a weekend but still only see the pay of a level 1, I hold service, I am responsible persons trained etc. Furthermore, the uniform allowance is not enough and hasn't changed in the 3 years that I've been with River Island every level of employees. No issues with the management in my store but when managers from other stores have come over to help out they typically confuse things, are rude and create a negative working environment by speaking poorly about staff members behind everyones back. On top of this they seems not to care about our store at all, they don't listen to our concerns or feedback, undermine our management team and cause more issue than they actually help out. Finally, we are told to book our holiday a year in advance which causes issues as most people don't know what they are doing so far in advance and despite this being an issues highlighted on the River Island employee survey this has never be addressed.

Advice to Management

There needs to be more recognition of individual employees contribution the the store work with suitable rewards. Management need to learn to listen to employee concerns and not just brush it off to one side.
