Does J D Wetherspoon have a pension plan?

Pros

Good pension scheme Good progression opportunities Discount on food and drinks

Cons

Too many levels of management giving conflicting instructions/orders Probation period is very strict and doesn’t allow for any illness (I got food poisoning from the pub food and was told to take 4 days off, which led to not passing the probation) Feeling of being monitored constantly

Advice to Management

Too many (unclear) levels of management giving orders (often conflicting). Training needs to be better (the online training only helps with so much).

How are senior leaders perceived at J D Wetherspoon?

Pros

Social job, rewarded when working hard, opportunities to travel, pub-to-pub transfers, (mostly) friendly coworkers, flexible to you, good for working parents, Guaranteed Minimum Hours are kept to (I would recommend to a friend that is willing to work hard)

Cons

Progression can be difficult depending on PM/AM, unsociable hours, managers not fully trained before running their own shifts, team leaders not used to their full potential, kitchen and bar are very separate, (should be working together more often) cross-train more staff, no work/life balance, thank-less job, understaffed more often than overstaffed, 6 weeks notice for any holiday, used and abused over festive periods and hours are then cut come January

Advice to Management

Utilise your Bar Team Leaders like you do Kitchen Team Leaders. They can do anything a manager can do out front, so use them. Kitchen checks, taking in and putting away deliveries, when PM's have an 'office day,' rota on a TL to do the heavy lifting out front. Give us a purpose.

How are the career development opportunities at J D Wetherspoon?

Pros

Working in central London the pay is good. quick career progression

Cons

Most pubs are always short staffed so everyone is over-worked. Salaried managers end up doing a lot of overtime and struggle to get the hours back so are essential doing unpaid work. You don't have the time or energy to do anything with days off = miserable/exhausted staff = poor customer service. In every pub I worked in for the company most policies were broken and most managers seriously lack people skills, good communication and even the slightest bit of empathy towards both employees and customers. Rota's sometimes not put out till the day before (not at all pubs)

Advice to Management

It pays to be nice. If more care was shown towards employees and the employee promise was kept then they would be happy at work and the company would have a lower staff turn over.

quick career progression
