What is the salary like at Harris Computer?

Pros

Great pay for a recent college grad, flexible work hours, welcoming environment, diverse teams (in terms of race, age, and gender), generous employee appreciation, supportive team environment, great benefits

Cons

The on-boarding process could be better streamlined with a set schedule or check list of what should be discussed, completed, or taken care of in the first week. My experience was people seemed a bit scattered and unsure of where to point me so I could get my questions answered (like taking care of my I-9 or how do I contact HR). The number of employee portals you have to use can be somewhat overwhelming and generally confusing. The Workday portal used for general on-boarding things (like setting up 401k) is somewhat unhelpful and could use a users guide or something.

Advice to Management

Keep things up to date and fresh! Don't let valuable employee resource documents get too old and out of date. While Harris encourages self-directed learning, things like a fire escape plan shouldn't be one of those things to learn on your own. It should be a given.

What are other benefits and incentives like at Harris Computer?

Pros

One thing to keep in mind is that Harris is a collection of independent business units, and there is the possibility of a high degree of variability between experiences depending on the business unit one is working in. That said -Great total compensation -Great work-life balance -Flexible work options -Good quality people (from both a technical and interpersonal perspective)

Cons

-The company is run in a fairly 'by the numbers way', which can lead to too much focus on short term metrics and a degree of aversiveness to uncertainty. The latter itself is not a problem per se, except to the degree that it can make it difficult to try new things because one needs to convince people of the likelihood of a successful outcome ahead of time, which may stifle new ideas. - I get the impression that many of the business units are viewed as legacy cash cows whose existing customer base and revenue generation are prioritized over taking on newer initiatives (the company has a modus operandi of acquiring companies aggressively which can lead to a lack of incentive to innovate internally, but I suspect this varies by business unit).

What are sales commissions like at Harris Computer?

Pros

Flexible work hours, remote work possible, Okay benefits, stable company

Cons

- Salaries about 25% below market average. - Don't ever expect anything more than cost of living raises, even in the case of a "promotion" - Impossible to attain objectives. Compensation & commissions contract basically rigged to never meet objectives and always pay the bare minimum, and with caps to make sure large lucrative sales don't pay too much commission. Use of dishonest tactics to rig the odds - VP's and EVP's ruling with an iron fist, not listening to the individual B.U's recommendations and visions from experienced employees to the detriment of morale - Company culture's extreme overuse of corporate buzzwords and platitudes I.E: "I want solutions, not problems" when voicing concerns or "hollistically leverage our synergies to maximize corporate brand trajectory" - Advancements & promotions given based on diversity quotas and personal relationship with VP's or EVP's rather than merit or competency. It's a management carousel with constant restructuring and very high turnover. - Zero re-investment in the individual B.U's is a challenge: all the profits go up to Harris buy new businesses, so growth is severely compromised: can't hire staff even if desperately needed, and all that counts is "milking the B.U's for all their worth".

Advice to Management

Hire managers and VP's who know the businesses and verticals rather than "excel file warriors" Listen to what 10-15-20+ year employees tell you when it comes to management decisions and directions. Align your actions with your words when it comes to caring about employees: Pay your valued employees and key players properly so that they don't leave for the competitors, and allow B.U's to re-invest some of their profits into growth (new staff, R&D, technology investments, etc).
