The care of the animals has improved in many ways.
The current executive director is an autocratic and charismatic individual who has prioritized budget-building and aligned the organization with the capitalistic belief that constant growth and... critical mass is the only way to create change. Because of how centralized, self-serving, and disingenuous the leadership is both internally and externally, there isn't a sense of community ownership, genuine trust, or engagement in the work with the staff, who are treated as disposable and replaceable. At a fundamental level this means the power dynamic will never change as long as this executive director remains in their position and/or frame of mind. They are not modeling the organization's vision for the future internally and will therefore never see the vision modeled outside the organization.
Advice to Management
For the executive director: If you cannot truly decenter yourself in this work and honor it with integrity, you should reconsider the position you are in at this organization. For the board: The... sanctuary isn't a safe, brave, or inclusive space for staff. Find and/or nurture an executive director who can decenter themselves in the work, inspire and engage in transformative action towards your vision of liberation, and commit to a just transition away from Whiteness, paternalism, and capitalism and towards a healthy, supportive, collective, transparent, humble, life-affirming way of movement making.
