Pros
Comfortable, non-competitive work environment - not your typical financial institution. Option for some remote work. Very good benefits (notably pension and a matching 401k). Semi-rare opportunity to... work at a fairly large financial institution in Northern VA. Very rare opportunity to work for a large cooperative - working culture is different/better than other public and private institutions I have worked for as it is a non-profit and truly exists to serve the financial needs of its member-owners. I personally find it rewarding to be a part of. Extremely flat management structure: there aren't really wasteful layers of middle manager roles just to provide people job titles. Beautiful office and campus that is easy to commute to.
Cons
Comfortable, non-competitive work environment - not your typical financial institution ... doesn't pay as well (recent salary and bonus structure change is a step in the right direction). This has... also created situations where long tenured employees/managers have gotten a little too comfortable and set in there ways, change and progress can be slow. Extremely flat management structure: doesn't create a lot of opportunity for upward mobility within the company.
Pros
I always ask my candidates to assess an opportunity by reviewing their ability to collaborate with the team and consider what they will learn from that team, how they feel about the role and the... potential for long term growth to fit their career goals, and how they feel about the company and it's mission and products. As I ask others to do this everyday, it is only fair that I make the same assessment. Here is my review: People: I work with people that bring a diversity of skillsets to their roles. The engineers are open, transparent, and easy to collaborate with. My colleagues value my input despite my background being a little bit different. Position: My role is ever evolving and stays at the cusp of challenge that keeps me ever engaged. I am able to leverage what I enjoy most about my role: having real conversations with people about what they want from their careers and leading them to the decisions that will best serve them. I have the freedom to put my candidates interest ahead of all, and I work for a company where more often than not, we provide the best option available Product/Mission: We are democratizing finance. I truly believe that an equitable society can only be achieved when everyone has access to information that will aid them in making decisions that lead them towards achieving financial independence. This is where I want to be for the foreseeable future.
Cons
Continue to favor processes that prioritize open communication over forms.
