What Employees Say
I worked at Los Angeles County Department of Public Health full-time for more than 5 years
It is great to be able to see your work applied on a population level and to help so many people. There is great stability once you get into the County and many opportunities for lateral moves if you... are not picky about what department you work in. The wages are just OK but you will work with some really smart and hard working people on important goals.
The HR department is completely obstructionist. It is so hard for qualified candidates to get into the system and so hard to hire the right people from the inside. It is also hard to advance in your... own department. People often have to go to other departments to promote. There are also people hanging on in some departments that do little work but the county can't seem get rid of them.
Advice to Management
A thorough independent review of the HR system and a complete overhaul of how they operate.

- No real engineering work; thus, no skills transferable if looking to work for more technical engineering firm - Sometimes no work and left sitting at desk looking at Reddit all day - They use... Bentley Microstation because all the designs from the '80s were done in that and it would be "too difficult" to convert/switch over to a more CONTEMPORARY software, i.e. AutoCAD
