Former Employee - Senior Software Engineer

I worked at CA Technologies full-time for more than a year

Pros

I worked for two years with the Gateway (core) team. Great Leadership: both the development director and all the managers have done a wonderful job of boosting team morale and bring order. We now... have several SCRUM teams firing with all cylinders and following a lean version of Agile that works for us. Even better, much of what's good about the current state of affairs is the result of employees' ideas, which leadership had the vision to listen to and implement. Great people: despite some of the engineers being intimidatingly smart, everyone is very professional, patient, and helpful. The social committee organizes events that are great for team building (private screening of Star Wars, bootcamp, etc). I have made more than the usual number of lasting friendships from my time working here. Great product: the Gateway is a true industrial-grade product that is mission-critical to big players in all industries. You will learn everything about the JVM and all the ways it interacts with Linux in a production environment. Users will test all the limits of the product and, besides regular feature and bug fix work, you will have the opportunity to deal with client support cases that are challenging to troubleshoot and diagnose. The knwoledge I gained from this experience is rare among application developers, and highly sought-after. Great prospects: the work that the Architect and team are doing around modernizing the Gateway hits a lot of the right checkmarks. The Gateway is a mature product with a lot of sticky legacy, but the directions in which it is being taken seem, at least to me, the right ones - both from an implementation engineer's and from a market relevance viewpoint.

Cons

In my experience, nothing really noteworthy. I'm not saying the company is perfect, but in my experience (with the Gateway team - other teams may have more challenges), the issues that I did... encounter got worked out for the most part
