I’m a guy and I want to dispel a common myth that my fellow men have, namely: men age like wine. This is patently not true, and is a lie many men tell themselves. I, recently came back from a dinner with my mixed friend circle, many of whom are approaching marriageable age, and this one particular dynamic was abundantly clear. (Continued in comments)
Damn, are anyone else's kids eating you out of house and home now that they're home all day? I don't know how my kids survived the school day without having a snack every hour on the hour. I want to limit the amount of snacks and junk we keep in the house but my husband thinks that's unnecessary, and the kids should eat when they're hungry. I don't want the kids to be hungry, of course, but I also don't want them eating all day.
Would you dump someone for this situation? I was very hungry in the morning and we had drank the evening before. He didn’t want to eat and suggested we take a shower. I fainted in his arms. He gets me to the couch, wrapped in a towel and offers me water. I feel ok and as he’s getting ready to leave ask about our plans for the week. Still sopping wet in a towel he leaves me and never reaches out to ask me how I was. I finished my shower and luckily didn’t faint.
Men absolutely don’t age like wine, but this misconception persists for the following reasons: - men are judged less harshly on appearance than are women - from a strictly physical standpoint men and women age at the same rate; however, men’s skin is thicker so doesn’t show wrinkles as early as women’s skin does. - however, “men aging like wine” is an exaggeration most men tell themselves to cope with the pain of being average. What actually happens? - as women themselves age and start looking for stable relationships, they become more generous with tolerating male faults. So many men who have glaring faults now get picked simply because they’re the only ones available, and not because they’ve somehow aged like wine - although it might appear as such. These men now foolishly believe they’ve become great catches, when in reality they’re being picked simply because they’re the only ones left. - I genuinely feel empathy for women. There are FAR more objectively “undateable men” than there are “undateable women”. What do I mean by that? “Undateable” means addicted to drugs, unemployed, not minimally presentable in a social setting. But what about George Clooney? - that’s akin to a boy thinking he will become a millionaire by becoming a painter simply because Pablo Picasso became one - it’s improbable and a cherry picked example to support a particular viewpoint So what’s the conclusion if you’re a guy? Being respectful, kind, and just a decent human being goes a LONG way. Being well-employed, educated, being able to hold a conversation is a welcome bonus!

That was too much to read, but I think I caught the gist of it. My take: men who are tall and have a full head of hair DO indeed age really well. Why - as they age, their personal hygiene improves, they can afford to dress better, etc. As for women, we’ve had to care about good hygiene and physical appearance for much of our lives, so there’s less room for improvement as we age. Disclaimer: These are all blanket statements based on societal norms.
Depends on the male and also female. In my experience most don’t take care of themselves / don’t workout / eat like shit / drink and smoke, so they look much older. Being overweight can make you look much older than you are.

Also men aging like fine wine isn’t all about looks — it’s more that things like status, money, and capability matter for a man’s attractiveness (much more so than for a woman’s) and older men are likely to have more of these things. That’s why older men are often seen as more attractive, but the same isn’t true for women. It’s not all about looks

This statement applies because men attain status, resources, patience, experience as they age, wrinkles show that age which shows maturity and belies stability, all of these things can be attractive to most women. Women like milk... This is because generally men value youth, beauty and fertility. A number of studies across cultures show that the most valued, wrong word, age for women is 22-25. This is apparently when women are at their most attractive, after that their beauty fades, they've often been through a few relationships and gained some damage from them. Their fertility begins to fade and along with that their beauty, so naturally if you take into account what men value most in women compared to what women value most in men the statement does apply. You have to realise in most cases men do not care about what material things women gain as they age because men rarely if ever actually benefit from it.
