What does a Telecom Technician do?

Telecommunications technicians are responsible for repairing, installing, modifying, and upgrading a company's telecommunications systems and the relevant and related equipment. They evaluate a customer's needs and perform diagnostic testing on complex systems to identify and resolve various faults, performing temporary fixes until they can do extensive work. They identify technical weaknesses and maintain a company's currently installed telecommunications systems during installation through diagnostic testing. They install systems that best meet the client’s needs and routinely test telecommunications systems to ensure all components function at optimal levels.

Telecommunications technicians check any wiring work they have done to ensure there are no exposed cables or other red flags and order replacement components for equipment and devices from suitable vendors if needed. They investigate and resolve customer complaints in a timely and professional manner. Telecommunications technicians need a high school diploma, a GED, or equivalency and completion of a post-secondary education program in telecommunications.
