What does a Technical Sales do?

Technical sales professionals specialize in the sales and promotion of technological products and services. They develop and execute strategies to identify and cultivate prospective customers. They generate leads and compile a database of contacts. They establish relationships with key decision-makers and other high-value prospects. In order to be able to make a compelling, targeted sales pitch, they educate themselves on the products by working closely with developers, marketing, and other internal teams.

Technical sales professionals typically have a bachelor’s degree in a technical field and a background in sales or IT roles. They should have solid sales skills and the ability to deliver a persuasive sales pitch. They must be well-informed about their company’s technology-based offerings. Proficiency using sales management software programs and related tools is helpful.

What responsibilities are common for Technical Sales jobs?
  • Provide technical support in sales presentations, briefings, product demonstrations.
  • Call on the 'House' accounts to regain the business.
  • Report on weekly performance and activity to sales manager.
  • Support unit sales plan through pre-sales and/or post-sales technical consulting activities.
  • Coordinate client needs with various internal resources and teams.
  • Stay up to date on technology news, including trends, product roadmaps, market conditions, etc.
  • Assist sales personnel in achieving their sales objectives and identifying opportunities.
  • Develop relationships with New Prospects by leveraging personal and business networks.
  • Formulate responses to customer inquiries/questions concerning complex system software and applications and provide software development and consultation to prospective users.
  • Responsible for answering sales inquiries from direct international sales markets.
  • Work closely with and learn from senior figures in Sales and Marketing.
  • Work with the various IT departments to align across on the supportability and architectural standards related to the technology being implemented.
  • Ensure customer retention and happiness with the service offerings the company provides.
  • Lead technical discussions in client meetings across multiple levels and disciplines to identify business and technical needs, issues and priorities.
  • Present project status internally and leads communication between the project team and its stakeholders.
