What does a Production Editor do?

Production editors oversee production processes required before they release leading up to the release of a publication. They perform tasks including management of publication staff, reinforcement of quality standards, and setting of deadlines. They also select content, negotiate contracts with freelancers, proofread and edit content, and provide relevant staff feedback. Production editors review content for editing purposes and communicate with writers, editors, clients, and vendors to ensure the publication meets standards and deadlines.

Production editors choose the content to feature in a publication including books, magazines, journals, or newspapers and schedule the publishing dates and relevant deadlines. They are responsible for hiring staff and negotiating contracts with freelancers. They proofread and edit content and offer feedback to the writers and other creators and editorial team members. Production editors have a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or related fields and often begin as writers and work their way up to editor status.
