What does a Metallurgical Engineer do?
Metallurgic engineers work in metals and alloys in various industrial and manufacturing settings. They analyze metals and alloys to determine their physical and chemical properties and may also contribute to manufacturing through the development of new alloys for specific applications, including a lightweight but strong metal used in transportation. They research metals using various methodologies including x-rays to examine their structure or an electron microscope to look at a molecular structure. They conduct tests to ascertain how metals react to extreme conditions, including physical stress or excessive cold.
Metallurgic engineers devise and produce alloys for multiple metals used in industrial products and must balance many factors. When necessary, they engineer solutions to the issues and introduce them to the manufacturing and design process. They support quality control processes in manufacturing, refining, and extraction through side observations and ensuring that workers adhere to best practices. Metallurgic engineers need a minimum bachelor's degree in engineering or related fields.
- Inspect, maintain, and design cathodic protection systems and equipment used for corrosion control to ensure compliance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Perform required readings (i.e. annual test points, isolated services, casings, bonds, foreign crossings) in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and procedures.
- Responsible for performance of QA checks on reads performed by others.
- Accurately enter compliance records into the appropriate system of record in a timely fashion.
- Participate as needed in regulatory audits.
- Supervise staff: administer the basic labor agreement, train and assign employees, monitor performance, and administer discipline.
- Implement safety policies and procedures, make safety contacts, and maintain safety records.
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in an engineering discipline.
- Adept at preparing drawings and schematics.
- Extensive experience using CAD software programs.
- Familiar with GTAW techniques.
- Excellent problem solving skills.
