Most art teachers enter the field with a degree in art history or another art-related field and a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree. For elementary school, you'll usually need a Bachelor's Degree in studies related to early learning in addition to your BEd.
Get your Bachelor of Education (BEd).
At many universities, you may do your BEd after your undergraduate degree or do both at the same time. During your BEd program, you will teach classes under the supervision of a certified teacher. The amount of supervised teaching time will vary depending on what province or territory you live in.
Apply for a teaching certificate.
After you have completed your BEd, you must obtain certification from your province or territory. You will have to submit proof of your educational qualifications. In addition, most provinces and territories have other requirements, such as a criminal background check.
Apply for art teaching jobs.
Once the province or territory grants you your teaching certificate, you can start applying for art teacher positions. If there aren't any available positions in your local school system, consider looking for employment with area museums or charitable organizations that offer art classes. Eventually, you'll find the position that's right for you.
