What does a Bridge Engineer do?

Bridge engineers design bridge projects and oversee the construction, inspection, and repair of bridges and related structures. They work in conjunction with planners, construction managers, inspectors, local officials, and other parties to ensure the project meets all safety standards while also accommodating deadlines, budget guidelines, and other considerations. They design structural plans, coordinate changes, and provide expert guidance throughout the building process.

Bridge engineers must have at least a bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline, with a master’s degree often preferred. They must abide by licensing laws and requirements, which vary by state. This role requires advanced knowledge of all applicable safety protocol and safe building standards. Bridge engineers must be comfortable using industry standard design programs, and have the ability to devote meticulous attention to detail.
