You could change shifts with another employee if they agreed, but you were usually given shifts that were not convenient
You can ask the manager for days off if needed(in advance) Also you can choose your shift if you have reasonable reasons such as if you're a student, mother etc...
Only if you are a parent, this will work out better for you

from what i know, manage always confirms with baristas for the availability in the coming up weeks, and then setup the rota.

it takes long for the manger to confirm the days you want off and sometimes your not guaranteed those days off
This may depend on your manager but if you ask for a specific day(s) off they will try their best to grant that you, even at short notice although that will then depend on the reason
