    Pros

Excellent opportunity to learn and practice.

    Cons

Too big and beaurucratic if you are looking to work for a team or become part of a family while working.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of all your employees and not just the few (e.g. doctors and nurses). Everyone makes a difference.

Current Employee - Medical Interpreter in New Haven, CT (US)

I have been working at Yale-New Haven Hospital full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

As an interpreter, I love to facilitate the communication between patients and providers. The need for interpreting services exists in every department within the hospital. One has the chance to meet diverse people and help to explain medical conditions and available treatments, as well as learning new terminology very often. The schedule is not strenuous and the payment is good.

    Cons

The department is very disorganized and does not promote the jobs around the hospital, letting these jobs be taken by phone-interpreters or freelance interpreters with more costly and less effective outcomes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring more qualified in-house interpreters; compare the costs with phone-interpreting services; allow interpreters to promote their services in the departments staying on floor and not in the office waiting for the dispatchers to give them a new assignment; open an internship for less experienced interpreters and allow them to be mentored by more experienced ones, with the possibility of being hired in the future.
