Former Employee – worked at YMCA part-time for more than a year
Pros – I was able to develop relationships and network with several people. Also I gained experience on how to help others and better a company.
Cons – the pay rate for the job in which I worked was very low, also there weren't many benefits.
Advice to Senior Management – Make the employees feel better with higher pay and advances.

Former Employee – worked at YMCA part-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Exceptional application opportunities for self-motivated leadership as well as means to incorporate your strengths to fulfill tasks. It also provides insight into the the workings of a non-profit organization that provides marketable, competitive services in addition to providing services to under-served populations. They also truly value their employees and make a point of showing that respect in a variety of ways.
Cons – Significant promotions are infrequent and not necessarily guaranteed. Moreover, while the initial salary may seem ideal for an applicant without a strong résumé, it is very hard to procure a raise.
Advice to Senior Management – It was not uncommon for a department to hire an amalgamation of personalities that ultimately decreased efficiency and self-motivation, and can drive people away from the business.

Current Employee – been working at YMCA part-time for more than a year
Pros – I love my job working as an individual Fitness Coach at the Y. Our urban Y has a very diverse membership, and I've coached everyone from teens to members in their 90s, with various backgrounds in exercise, physical limitations, and life stories. Both my peer co-workers and management at my facility are good and smart people, who truly care about our members and the organization as a whole. I was hired with no previous paid work experience in Fitness, just a few YMCA-USA weekend trainings I had attended and passed. Since starting my part time position, I have taken and passed an exam to become a nationally certified personal trainer (which in my opinion, has benefitted both myself and my employer). I may not be able to work here forever due to my changing financial situation, but I will be forever grateful for my experiences here.
Cons – As is the case with many non-profits, pay is modest--I can't support myself on my part time earnings here. Most positions outside of management are part time, capped out below 20 hours per week. And for us part-timers, there are no benefits, not even holiday pay for legal holidays that the facility is open. Management tries to give cost of living and longevity raises, but a lot of our pay here is in "good vibes" from our members and co-workers. That is great to a point, but most of us are either students, retired, or working 1-2 other jobs to make working here financially viable.
Advice to Senior Management – Consider setting up a "career track" for front desk and fitness staff who want a full-time, longer term relationship to the organization. Offer health insurance, matching retirement funding, professional development, and other benefits that only management employees get now.

Former Employee – worked at YMCA part-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Free Gym Membership for individual and great discount for family membership, including sport programs. Working with diversified co-workers and serving families in your own community.
Cons – Management issues all around, never enough money to provide for the promises made to members; never enough materials for the Arts and Crafts. For min wage, I was paying for materials. The insurance cost too much for what it can actually provide. For a non-profit, supposedly family oriented minded company, when your elderly mother falls down a flight of stairs and you're only PT, don't expect to keep your job.
Advice to Senior Management – Listen to the employees. If the same complaint is made over and over, it's probably true, and something should be done to remedy the situation. We are not all bratty, lazy teenagers just looking to complain.

Former Employee – worked at YMCA part-time for more than a year
Pros – Great work environment and perfect for anyone who's looking for a part-time job. Working the front desk position will sharpen your people skills and teach you the importance of good customer service. The company really values their customers and promotes a positive atmosphere. Tasks mainly include checking in the guests, answering phones, selling memberships and promoting the YMCA programs.
Cons – Some days can be very slow and you are required to stay sedentary at the desk. It makes your shift seem twice as long and all you can really do is busywork or paper-filing.
Advice to Senior Management – I enjoyed the management and my only advice to them is to keep up the great work.

Former Employee – worked at YMCA full-time for more than a year
Pros – Great environment, great people, plenty of opportunities. You receive free gym/pool membership. The branch I worked at was professional, yet laid back.
Cons – The biggest con was the low pay, but if you take a job with this company, you know it is a non-profit organization and money probably isn't your main motivator.
