    Pros

The benefits are awesome, lots of PTO, and it is the most diverse company I have ever worked for.

    Cons

Since it is an insurance company, changes to company policy are happening all the time to keep up with legislative changes. This can be a bit overwhelming at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate with subordinates regulary to let them know "what's in it for me".

    Current Employee - Sales Representative

    Pros

Pay is good. Facilities top notch with gym and cafeterias at most locations. Coworkers are great and support each other. Flexible schedule to allow for family/balance.

    Cons

Stating our culture and values are one thing but not a reality in practice. The culture is such that upper management is not open to feedback. Do not really want to hear if things are not going well. Not a good situation as our industry is undergoing extreme changes as a result of the Affordable Care Act. and we need to be honest with ourselves about the future. Health insurance benefits are not great for such a large organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Evaluate mistakes made, learn and improve. Do not be afraid of self-evaluation. Encourage the feedback from your frontline employees so that you can make the company better,

Former Employee - Account Manager in Richmond, VA (US)

    Pros

    Ability to work from home

    Cons

IT systems so antiquated half the time the programs don't work and they take millions of dollars from customers for programs that have no value. Account Executives and upper mgt cover it up and support NOT giving customers refunds because that impacts their bonus.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest - listen to the little people instead of just Account Execs.

    Former Employee - Developer Advisor

    Pros

Salary level is good. A LOT of work to do. Lots of opportunities to learn new technologies and skills.

    Cons

A LOT of work to do. Jobs are not secure. WellPoint is famous for having rounds of layoffs. It is difficult to think out of the box there. They talk a lot about work/life balance, but it is mostly just talk.

Former Employee - Provider Relations Specialist  in  Middletown, NY (US)
Former Employee - Provider Relations Specialist in Middletown, NY (US)

    Pros

Benefits are decent, although there have been significant negative changes since Obamacare became law. You get weekends off. People you work with are generally nice. It used to be a wonderful place to work.

    Cons

Pay is less than what should be expected considering the skills and performance that are required from employees. Annual increases NEVER keep up with the rate if inflation. There is a bonus system that rewards you based on how well you can kiss corporate butt. Mid level management is constantly running around in circles implementing the latest policy according to the fad of the month. If you don't like the policy this week, just wait until next week. You will be micromanaged from the instant you walk in the door in the morning until you leave in the afternoon. There is ZERO job security, as they are constantly outsourcing jobs of increasing complexity to the Philippines and to India.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop micromanaging every detail of the employees day. It tells them that you do not trust them to make intelligent decisions. Stop the constant threat of outsourcing. It is very demoralizing to work at a place where you watch groups of people get called into a conference room, handed exit papers, and then escorted out of the building after cleaning personal belongings from their desks or work areas.
