I have been working at Waste Management full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Office culture in Edmonton was OK. Morale is slowly dying

    Cons

Ever been on a cliff with your hands tied behind your back?
    If not, definitely work here!
As a manager, you will have zero opportunity to make decisions. Need to make sure your customers are taken care of? No problem! They'll just tack on every fee imaginable to make sure you look like you got egg on your face and have zero credibility with the people you sold their products and services to.

Oh yah! I forgot to tell you, if you would like to lose every day and feel like you're climbing up a hill that's a treadmill, WM is the place for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Engage your managers in decision making rather then forcing them to do things that aren't right.

I worked at Waste Management full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people you worked with (past tense). Everyone is leaving the place.

    Cons

    - Worn down and decrepit facilities that they will spend no money to fix or upgrade.
    - Everyone works in a silo, you can't talk to another department without asking for permission
    - No one knows the end game or goal of the area leadership because they never talk to anyone
    - Not allowed / can't make a decision as a supervisor or manager
    - No one in key positions, you end up having to work 12-16 hours a day as a manager/supervisor
    - No trust among any level of staff in the organization

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you hire a manager or supervisor - you hired someone that, hopefully, will assist you in running your business. Let the do what is needed to run the business and don't yell, intimidate, get your feathers ruffled for your ego.

Upgrade or fix some of the facilities in Western Canada that are in a decrepit state. Some places have their ceiling falling down.

I worked at Waste Management full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Once and a while they ordered us lunch

    Cons

This was the worst paying, most disorganized and ridiculously horrible position I've ever had in my life. The compensation is ridiculous for someone that lives in Alberta. The leadership is non-existent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of managing out of your boardroom in Calgary - how about if you come out and actually visit the sites every once and a while and see how your staff is doing.

I worked at Waste Management full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The fellow staff in the trenches with you day-in-and-day-out

    Cons

WM Corporate needs to wake up and see what's going on in Western Canada. It's a very toxic environment.
Huge issues with leadership. They will not address any issues and constantly stick it to the customers. They've cut off some major accounts and lost them all for the mighty dollar. They cannot see the forest through the trees. It's constantly an uphill battle as a manager to get simple things ordered. One time we ran out of toilet paper for a week! One of the staff had to purchase toilet paper for us. By the way, when you restructure your operations every year that doesn't give staff a very good feeling inside. Constantly changing direction and goals. There is absolutely no consistency in the message brought down to the employees. Extremely high turn-over of staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop managing by EBIT and start listening to employees and customers.

    Pros

Air-conditioned building and running water in the washroom

    Cons

    - Ever changing sales targets
    - No leadership from the guy in the corner office
    - Zero HR oversight, bullying, intimidation from managers
    - Try to get out of paying you commissions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The leadership staff in Calgary should all be fired and new, caring management should be put in place.

I have been working at Waste Management full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Fellow drivers are Freindly and are always willing to help you out providing you can find a senior driver anymore, they are all leaving

    Cons

Drivers know more about the customers they service then the managers and managers don't listen to drivers. Bulling mentality, crappy equipment, trucks down more then on road.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Firings should start at top first and trickle down. You can only lose customers for so long. Your only as good as your people so try listening to them. Get rid of bonus system doesn't work. Reward managers based on performance not numbers!!!

    Pros

The only pro is the 20% discount you will get on using Bagster.

    Cons

    The management
    The consistent changing goals
Changing of rules so that you don't receive commission

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit being so greedy and look after your staff once and a while. Stop treating people like they are simply a resource and like human beings.

    Pros

You get some leeway in the first 3 months to do what you need and then the clamps start...

    Cons

Senior leadership in Calgary has no idea what they are doing. Complete negligence, inability to run the business, the VP is more interested in golfing than making sure his business is running properly. Complete lack of a future vision. Keep increasing prices and losing customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you continue hiring idiots that never question you, you'll soon fall the way of the Roman Empire.
