I worked at Unum Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

the benefits are excellent with good vacation, insurance and 401k. the co workers are also good

    Cons

the management typical works you to death to meet numbers. they say they care about employees but its all about numbers to them. the pay is not reasonable compared to what someone with the same degree can make elsewhere

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

if a caseload for a specific job is 250 do not give someone 150% then wonder why everyone is behind. use common sense and listen to the specialist not a number on a computer. use commons sense!

Current Employee - Customer Service Specialist I in Chattanooga, TN (US)

I have been working at Unum Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Beautiful facility, comfortable environment....the benefits are incredible - affordable and reasonable costs...management is encouraging and personable....a great amount of growth opportunity....reasonable salary for the area....good schedule.

    Cons

Training program needs improvement for Customer Contact Center - very bumpy and uncertain. The systems are outdated and there are too many (over 20) to work from. The budget really needs to focus more on improving the call center capabilities, programs, and training program.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More focus is greatly needed on improving the call center programs and training program

I have been working at Unum Group full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits, generally provides good work-life balance, some areas provide nice advancement opportunities.

    Cons

Don't count on a raise unless you change job levels, which can be difficult to do. Old software systems don't work together and can be frustrating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the conservative strategy, but provide more communication to non-management employees.

Positive work environment, respectful culture, strong commitment to customer experience. We've grown a lot over the last few years and have gone through signficant, yet positive changes.

    Cons

we're lucky to work for such a strong company. Lots of change, which can be challenging, but we're all in it togther.

Somewhat coercive and heartless about people who have been loyal.

Former Employee - Assistant Vice President and Special Counsel
Former Employee - Assistant Vice President and Special Counsel

I worked at Unum Group full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The camaraderie and benefits/salary is good. Working conditions are also good.

    Cons

Politically it is tilted toward the MBA types. The ceiling is difficult to impossible to break (SVP and above). Ultimately your success depends on being an adherent to the philosophy du jour.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a heart with older employees who have been with you for many years. Just because the Supreme Court has eviscerated liability for age discrimination does not entitle you to reducing costs by extermination of 55 plus people.
