I have been working at University of Miami as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Relaxed working environment as long as your are capable. Easy interview. Mostly friendly workers. Freedom to set personal protocols and working plans, very good for the self motivated.

    Cons

low pay, no benefits for temporary workers, disorganized HR system, no training given, you learn as you go and the possibility of making costly mistakes is often. Problems are addressed as they appear, not before. No strong "company culture" present. General lack of healthy food choices on campus. Outdated computers everywhere.

I have been working at University of Miami full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Lifestyle, schedule, and the fact that you get paid to learn stuff is pretty sweet! The weather is amazing and the campus looks like a country club.

    Cons

Schedule can be bad, though, when you have to spend an entire day and night grading. That sucks. Plus the people aren't very nice. College students seem to have become even worse since I left.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about your graduate program more. Why keep accepting Chinese students?

I worked at University of Miami full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Salaried, excellent health and retirement benefits, paid vacation, opportunity to see visting lectures & UM events and discount prices, opportunity for career growth throughout the University.

    Cons

The Development department, unfortunately, was nothing short of a hostile work environment. The harassment and discrimination I personally experienced and witnessed has no place in a professional work environment, much less at an educational institution. The HR department did little to address these issues and complaints were often not handled with confidentiality. Also, although salaried at 37.5 hours a week, I often worked 50-60 hours a week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This particular department of the university has gained a reputation (both within and outside of UM) over the last decade of being a hostile work environment. Several members of the supervising staff were well known for displaying this behavior; so much so that jokes were often made by senior management in staff meetings about the poor behavior of other senior management. My humble advice is to appropriately and discretely address employee concerns.
