UM is a great place for student jobs, managers are very understanding about academic responsibilities.

IT Security (Current Employee)
Coral Gables, FL (US)

I have been working at University of Miami as an intern for less than a year

ProsThe managers understand that students have to do school work, which takes priority over the job. This helps if you are trying to get a day off to study.

ConsThe pay is competitive to other basic jobs but still not very much. It is easy to get confused becasue managers have multiple responsibilities besides being in charge of the intern.

I have learned a lot there but this is not that place to stay if you want to experience any growth in 3-5 years.

IT Manager (Current Employee)
Coral Gables, FL (US)

I have been working at University of Miami full-time for more than 10 years

ProsRelatively slow environment with lots of downtime; good work-life balance; good tuition remission benefits for undergraduate degrees

ConsLow salaries when compared to the Corporate environment, most staff have been there 10-30 years so there is little incentive and lots of resistance to change.

Advice to Senior ManagementGood place to work but many times progress gets bogged down in red tape or people unwilling to make a decision which could make them look bad. There are no repercussions for poor service because most of the time, that is the best you can get at that specific salary range.

University of Miami's Mechanical Engineering PhD program

PhD Student (Current Employee)
Coral Gables, FL (US)

I have been working at University of Miami full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat campus, descent salary for a PhD student, challenging and interesting research topics.

ConsStressful at times, also there is no policy to protect the PhD student against abusive supervisor. Very likely, your supervisor will probably keep you 4 to 4.5 year for your PhD instead of 3 (with a Mater degree) even if you are a good candidate.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease, protect the PhD student against abusive practice.
