I worked at University of California Berkeley full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Interesting mix of professors, students, researchers. Coursework was challenging and required students and teachers to consider current events and future trends.

    Cons

As in any institution, there is a lot of bureaucracy involved in doing anything outside of protocol. The course management systems were disjointed and confusing at times. Lots of busy work grading.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give out GSI positions before the start of the semester.

I worked at University of California Berkeley part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good teaching support and resources available. Given latitude to develop course and teaching style. Motivated students.

    Cons

Some bureaucracy, as to be expected in a large institution. No parking benefits, so had to feed meter on teaching days. Not a lot of overt collegiality with others in department due to individual schedules and sabbatical leaves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider providing a parking benefit of some sort to lecturers.

    Pros

Management is accessible and helpful. It's a world class institution with access to almost any scholarly material you could want.

    Cons

Time off is easy to acquire, and schedules are flexible, but it depends on what department and what professors or researchers you are working with. Pay is slightly low, but work is enjoyable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work
