    Pros

Worked with great people, students and teachers. Got a great hourly salary through work-study. Regular set schedules and training beforehand.

    Cons

Some communication issues from higher-ups. Sometimes there were technical difficulties that we were not trained for, and just thrown off the deep end to resolve. Hard to find the right people to contact about paperwork and problems to resolve.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve training process, and have a better means of communicating with managers/boss.

    Pros

The benefits are great. There are excellent career development classes for free. I love working in academia - it's exciting to be around the variety of staff, students and faculty that are here.

    Cons

The salaries are below market average, but I guess nobody works in academia if they want to make money. Also, the UC budget is based upon money from the state, and that money has steadily and dramatically decreased over the years. We get very few raises. We can go 5 years without getting a raise because it's dependent on the state budget.

    Pros

A good, safe environment to explore what kinds of work or fields of study interest you, under the guidance of some of the world's leading researchers.

    Cons

Hours and progress completely dependent on individual drive, so be prepared to prioritize school work and deadlines. Funding may be an issue for some labs; may have to work for free, although an alternative is to get units from it.

Current Employee - Graduate Student Researcher in Berkeley, CA (US)

    Pros

Accomplished, fun, intellectually curious fellow students. Dedicated teachers in the form of world-class professors and post-doctoral fellows well on their way to becoming professors elsewhere. There are great opportunities to set your own hours, choose your vacations, develop your own research priorities, and make friends at the workplace. Reasonable health care plan, competitive stipend nationally but not great for cost of living.

    Cons

There are incredible differences in your experience depending on the particular professor you work with. The number of hours worked can be strongly dependent on your experimental approaches but can also be a result of the culture of the lab. Preparation is focused on developing scientific questions and pursuing faculty positions, though Berkeley does appear to be a leader in examining alternate paths for STEM graduates

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More formal career development, limit the number of graduate training spots, and increase the presence of staff scientists and lab technicians to make the research enterprise more sustainable

I had a fun time gaining worthwhile experience beyond the scope of my education.

Former Employee - Undergraduate Research Assistant  in  Berkeley, CA (US)
Former Employee - Undergraduate Research Assistant in Berkeley, CA (US)

    Pros

    - A good way to get experience and some level of training in a field that is related to your interest/major.
    - Hands on experiments in a lacking environment (UCBerkeley is known to be very theoretical in its approach to learning)

    Cons

    - Rather awkward hours and depends on level of commitment (which can be good or bad)
    - Organization and funding can severely limit progress

    Pros

The hours were very flexible as we worked from a week to week schedule. Our boss has always been great and the people you work with are all very engaging.

    Cons

Dealing with the school HR has been, and always will be, a pain. We tend to be looked down upon by the higher ups and we dont really get any nice equipment.
