I have been working at University of California Berkeley

    Pros

Berkeley attracts excellent staff mainly because they enjoy working with other smart people committed to education for all. While the salaries on the whole are average to below average when you add in the benefits you find you are making a salary similar to your peers.

    Cons

To get a raise you generally have to switch jobs.

I worked at University of California Berkeley full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great location, lots of fun things to do when you're not working. You have access to lots of companies just by being in the Bay area and having the name recognition of Berkeley.

    Cons

The bureaucracy can be frustrating at times, as with any big school. Administration doesn't have any useful policies on treatment of graduate students by professors, so be careful who you work for.

I have been working at University of California Berkeley full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Top notch laboratories
    Great location
    Lively campus
    Social activities

    Cons

    Less than stellar professors
    Lack of research funding
    Cost of living

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not give faculty a blank check in mentoring students and postdocs. If a faculty is not a good mentor, do not assign students or postdocs to his lab and ruin careers and lives of young scientists. Train your faculty better.

I worked at University of California Berkeley as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great environment that encourages research, excellent program and school overall. There is many opportunities for me to interact with my PI and everyone is friendly and are willing to help.

    Cons

Sometimes PIs may expect long hours, some labs have a terrible work-life balance. Sometimes it is hard to relax because everyone is always working hard all the time.
