My experience at UBC was mostly positive.

Administrative Assistant (Current Employee)
Vancouver, BC

I have been working at University of British Columbia full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe best part of working for UBC is the salary and benefits. It is also a beautiful campus and is very well serviced by transit. There are many food service outlets and too many coffee shops to count, including five Starbucks outlets. There are many different positions in multiple fields. I worked in office administration and there were always new jobs opening up.

ConsThis is a very top heavy bureaucratic environment with many inept managers on power trips. Some departments are great, others are pure hell.

Advice to Senior ManagementValue your employees and listen to what they have to say.

Great experience!

Student Assistant (Current Employee)
Vancouver, BC

I have been working at University of British Columbia full-time for less than a year

ProsAutonomy. Ideas and suggestions listened to and taken seriously. Hours flexible. Great deal of personal satisfaction with job being done. Helped my prof with literature searches and assisted a PhD student with construction of his project.

ConsSome very long days. Had a problem when we started the project and I was there until midnight. Not unwilling to put in the extra time when needed as some days were lighter. Only a summer job. Wish it could be full time.

Advice to Senior ManagementNo advice. Management was terrific.

Generally a great place to work

Communications Coordinator (Current Employee)
Vancouver, BC

I have been working at University of British Columbia part-time for less than a year

Pros- positive atmosphere
- great team
- interesting topics to work with
- constantly changing workplace
- as a staff member working with faculty, I am constantly learning

Cons- attitudes of some senior staff
- ancient computers/technology
- status quo is accepted
- guidelines for workplace behaviour are not accessible nor followed

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage innovation rather than status quo. Encourage those in high places to challenge themselves even more and try to both teach and learn from the more junior employees.
