    Pros

Full of smart, intelligent and down-to-earth people who are devoted to science. If you want to have a career in science, this is the place to be. However, if you want a career in administration, there is a lack of progression in UCL, but this may be the same across all universities.

    Cons

Administrative support is often poor and slow. The office environment depends on which building you are based in - some offices are small and overcrowded but others are modern and air-conditioned.

    Advice to Management

Every administrative department should have a standard level of service. Currently, some admin department are much less efficient than others, resulting in waste of time and resources for researchers.

    Pros

Nice benefits, good work life balance. Autonomy in ones work.

    Cons

Pay is lower than market rate, and Ince at top of pay band (easy to achieve) you pay is maxed out with no real chance of promotion. A "once hired, never fired attitude" means that some colleagues once in the door can never be shown it. Promotions given on patronage rather than skill.

    Advice to Management

Address the patronage and chronism properly rather than by flimsy HR policie . Introduce better nonacademic pay scales. Reduce complexity of firing incompetent staff.

  6. A very stimulating and relaxed work environment where you work with best brains in any given knowledge domain.

    Pros

A very relaxed work environment with great career progression opportunities. UCL encourages everyone including staff and students to engage in enterpreneurial activities .

    Cons

Low salaries compared to other companies for a similar job description especially when comparing London wages and high cost of living, travel.

    Pros

An excellent place to work if you are an academic. Very good renumeration at all levels, pension scheme, access to training, lectures. Inspiring collegaues.

    Cons

The administrative system is a little too bureaucratic but I guess it cannot be avoided in a state-funded institution.

    Pros

I worked as a postdoctoral research associate in the biochemistry dept. I found UCL to be a great place to engage in some of the best and most exciting research of my career. You're surrounded by some of the best scientists in the world, many of whom are also friendly and collaborative. Many of the courses available to postdocs were of the highest quality, e.g. scientific writing, career development, entrepreneurship.

    Cons

As with any large institution, there are bureaucratic issues and inevitably not _everyone_ is wonderfully friendly and helpful! Bear in mind that my experiences may be very 'localised' as UCL is a huge organisation and there will be big variability even from lab to lab.

    Pros

Pay is good and the academics are excellent.

    Cons

London is expensive and space is cramped.

    Advice to Management

Invest heavily in more space for your research staff - three or four to a small room is far from productive.
