It's grand,

Researcher (Current Employee)
Cork (Ireland)

I have been working at University College Cork as a contractor for more than 5 years

ProsCork is a nice city to live in, lots of character, everything's convenient. If you can get established here it offers a great quality of life. There are good people here doing some fantastic work, and it would be nice if they had more support from the institution in general

ConsNot enough investment or proper planning in infrastructure makes it a frustrating place to work, and there is a risk that good people are becoming demoralised.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry reinvigorating the teaching and research programmes by providing genuine opportunities for career development for aspiring staff

Great University that encourages critical thinking and independent research. Good diversity and a host of resources

Doctoral Student (Current Employee)

I have been working at University College Cork full-time for more than 3 years

ProsSmaller polytechnic university that facilitates collaboration and interaction between departments. Excellent for research based occupation, especially for doctoral and post-doctoral researchers.

ConsLot of bureaucracy and lack of centralized administration.

Some great people make it a top university. Suffers from sector wide underfunding

Assistant (Former Employee)
Carrigaline (Ireland)

I worked at University College Cork full-time for more than a year

Pros- Real sense of pride among staff and students. Good sporting history.
- Strong President who is highly motivated and effective.
- Great campus.
- Solid reputation.

Cons- Media plan is weak, insufficient input from students.
- Posts remain unfilled forever, no clear timeline.
- Slow to implement new programmes and adapt to changing demands in the industry.

Advice to Senior ManagementForce Tyndall to brand itself more strongly as UCC and diversify research areas if possible.
Restructure budgets at the top.
Reform Teaching and Learning as advised as a matter of priority.
Lobby hard with a single voice for an increase in the education budget.

Very Good

PhD Student (Current Employee)

I have been working at University College Cork

ProsUniversity College Cork has great people and great clubs for students and Staff alike. I would definitely recommend this as a place to work

ConsThere are probably too many layers of general admin in the college. Makes knowing where to go to get things done outside your department quite difficult

Advice to Senior ManagementThe admin side of the college should be modernized and streamlined to facilitate quicker decision making. I feel this would free up a lot of peoples time and reduce stress levels when looking to do things outside your departmental remit.
