Great Non-Proft organization located on the Berkeley Campus.

Human Resources Coordinator (Former Employee)
Berkeley, CA (US)

I worked at UC Berkeley full-time for more than a year

ProsRelaxed academic atmosphere.
Great location on the Cal campus.
Clear company directive (supporting students and alumni).
Fun company activities (tail gate parties, summer camps, fund raisers).
Good place to start a career.

ConsWorking at a non-profit means tight budget and limited resources. You are always aware of the company working on less money than it needs to achieve all its goals. But at least you know where the money is spent and its a good cause.

Advice to Senior ManagementAlthough half of the staff is young and have fresh, innovative ideas the older (and higher level) management does not always embrace newer technologies and approaches. Like many academic settings, CAA is a little stuck in older ways of doing things.

Security Monitor

Security Monitor (Former Employee)
Berkeley, CA (US)

I worked at UC Berkeley part-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe job has very flexible hours, you can often do homework or browse the internet while working. Work is very light and easy.

ConsThe hours can be late, and having to work on breaks and holidays is not great. There are minimum shift requirements as well. Sometimes the residents can be rude.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop trying to centralize everything.

Over 25-year career as Administrative Assistant I, II and III

Administrative Assistant III (Former Employee)
Berkeley, CA (US)

I worked at UC Berkeley full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat benefits, including the usual (health, vacation, etc.) but also the environment: lovely surroundings, redwood trees, creek, etc.

ConsI couldn't rise past a certain level without becoming a manager, which I didn't want to be.

Pros-very flexible work schedule
-friendly work environment
-stress-free work load

-stagnant pay

Advice to Senior ManagementPerhaps a restructuring with more job mobility for senior attendants would incentivize the employees to perform better.

My work makes a difference!

Trainer IV (Current Employee)
Berkeley, CA (US)

I have been working at UC Berkeley full-time for more than 5 years

ProsWorking at UC Berkeley means I make a difference everyday. I contribute to something larger than myself by contributing to an instution that makes the world a better place. The benefits are outstanding, and having work-life balance is actually possible.

ConsI'm not paid as much as I would be in the private sector, and I often work using antiquated technology. Faculty is king, and the contributions of staff are more likely to be overlooked than praised and celebrated.

Advice to Senior ManagementAppreciate staff more, let them know their work matters, and offer timely, relevant, and specific information about performance. Consider workload balance - having too much work and not enough time to accomplish it is demotivating. Ask yourself...What should we stop doing? How can we streamline processes?
