Excellent staff treated as commodities.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Tribal Group

ProsNice bunch of talented people
Training and development: not so much in terms of qualifications, but rather the opportunity to learn new software and gain experience, which is vital for career progression
Work-life balance

ConsWe felt disengaged from the company as a whole: that was good in some ways, but not so in others.

Salary didn't always reflect the success of the company: there were a lot of salary freezes, office and team changes and overall cutbacks during the bleak times and things didn't really change after new contract wins and improved market conditions. Similarly, as one improved their skills and ended up doing more to help the company, it wouldn't show in their pay. Aside from slight cost of living increases, things didn't change between joining with considerably less experience and three years later, when I was doing a lot more specialist work.

Perks: the online scheme seemed to be designed to dissuade or at least it just targeted a particular niche (in other words, it wasn't useful at all).

Advice to Senior ManagementWork out where you are going, recruit accordingly and value your staff.

Don't expect Training or Management

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Norwich, England (UK)

I have been working at Tribal Group full-time for more than a year

ProsOpportunity to travel.. Can be left to own devices for the most the time. Due to the lack of management at the office - can pretty much get away with murder.

ConsNo management. No training. Terrible team communication. Lots of office politics to contend with... Will happily expect staff to work until the late hours because of staffing issues.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmploy actual managers.

Continual downsizing/cutbacks have created a company with little true integrity

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Cambridge, East of England, England (UK)

I worked at Tribal Group full-time for more than 5 years

ProsSome really interesting contracts and work.
A pool of talented people in some areas.

ConsPoor middle management. When people are promoted to positions for which they lack the necessary ability, the company do not address the fundamental problems
No CPD (continuing professional development) despite repeated promises.
Lack of honesty about company plans. Sudden redundancies.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe honest with your staff, value them and invest in them. It will reap much greater rewards in the longer term than short-term short-sighted profits.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Mixed Opportunities

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Tribal Group

ProsDepending on department great opprtunities for advancement and a very good atmosphere. If you are feted to be working in a profitable section you will have scope for career development and personal development.

ConsVery variable across the country, Tribal is a series of small companies bought together by investors with a vision, what that was appears to have been lost and Tribal is struggling to define itself and within it's markets. This can must make management difficult and decisions often seem arbitrary with career development tied to whatever is the new vogue.

Advice to Senior ManagementA clear vision is needed for the future is needed.

Stuck in the past, Management highly inexperienced

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Sheffield, England (UK)

I have been working at Tribal Group full-time for more than a year

ProsGood Salary, Free Tea & Coffee, flexible working hours.

ConsManagement highly inexperienced! Really glitchy products! They tend to simply "add a new bit on" which should hopefully mask the broken parts, I think there software has more versions than I do hot dinners!!

Developers living in the stone age! QA is almost none existent!!

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to staff more! Seek advice when needed and start looking further afield when developing software, all of it needs a fresh approach! Excellent development teams scattered around Tribal but terrible managers who don't utilize them to the full extent!

Good in parts

Senior Consultant (Former Employee)
London, England (UK)

I worked at Tribal Group part-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat colleagues, great products, strong reputation and brand which gets you through the door of clients'.

ConsStruggled to capitalize on all intellectual capital of the companies it bought or to leverage off the range of different relationships. Less of a tribe more of a collection of many tribes. Left its value base behind..

Stuck in the past

Software Developer (Current Employee)
Sheffield, England (UK)

I have been working at Tribal Group full-time for more than a year

ProsHelpful and friendly people (mostly anyway)
Global contracts with high potential
Flexible working hours
Attempting some agile methods
Office newly refurbed
Free tea and coffee

ConsSoftware is dated
Although there are a few good developers, innovation is stifled by those in charge.
Very much a software hacking company with few industry standard patterns or methods used. It's all about bolting on some new half baked features and shoving it out the door.
Lip service is as much attention as testing is given.
Senior devs fear change due to their lack of knowledge and experience outside of tribal.
They need to drag themselves into this decade and put more focus around quality.
Management are very inexperienced and run around like headless chickens (literally)
Much more agile methods are needed around the software development if they are to sell themselves as "agile", it's more than just two week iterations and a daily stand up.

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage new ideas, there are developers with good experience on the floor.
Learn more about the software development cycle.
Place more emphasis on quality and a little less on new half cooked features.

A great company overall and a fine place to work

Software Developer (Current Employee)
Sheffield, England (UK)

I have been working at Tribal Group full-time for more than a year

Pros- Management are excellent, they trust employees and give a lot of support when needed.
- Colleagues are also very nice, a good and postive atmosphere overall
- Flexitime
- Can work from home
- Overtime available if wanted
- Agile implemented properly (mostly)
- 9/12 on the Joel test

Cons- Some very mediocre employees
- Code base isn't as nice as it should be
- Unit tests exist, but writing them is always harder than it should be
- A little bit too much bureaucracy for an agile company
- Stories aren't always as well defined as one would like
- A promise of lots of on the job training has not been fulfilled

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove the quality of the developers, either through more training or better hiring practices.

Short, and not very sweet

Consultant (Former Employee)
London, England (UK)

I worked at Tribal Group

ProsColleagues were welcoming, supportive and always willing to give advice to projects, even if not personally invovled.

ConsUnfortunately the Company has gone through many changes over the past few years, leading to dissatisfaction, unease and unrest amongst employees. Communication from the top down was poor, suggestive of a sentiment that the employees were merely commodities to be traded for the best possible share yield.

Advice to Senior ManagementDecide on your plan and stick to it; don't keep changing the goalposts for people.
