I have been working at Travelers Companies

    Pros

There are many good and smart people. Focus is on getting better all the time. Lots of opportunities to learn and to contribute. Management emphasis is properly on responsible profit.

    Cons

Tight deadlines are used to motivate people. Management can try to do too much at once. Different parts of the business may not always work together.

I worked at Travelers Companies full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The environment and culture in our department was great, there was a perfect balance of work and life. It felt like a family and it made it difficult to leave. The work was consistent and the company doesn't like to fire people so they will find a new position for you if you need more to do. They also value go-getters so the more confident you are the better off you'll be.

    Cons

With most people having been there for 5 years+ there is not much room for advancement. You can get a "senior" in front of your title but not a change in position. The benefits is alright but compared to other companies, it's not much.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be afraid to manage, some people see your relaxed attitude and take advantage of it. The favoritism is obvious to everyone and sometimes they are deserved but please learn to value those who are loyal and doing great work as well.

Not in tune with what employees want and need. I would be a better employee if I had more work life balance.

I worked at Travelers Companies full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Travelers is a great company to work for. The strong conservative underwriting practices keep the company in a strong financial position thereby allowing the ability to offer competitive salaries and benefits. There is a good amount of work-life balance for most positions and leadership fosters an environment of professional development.

    Cons

As with most long-standing companies, it can be difficult for individuals who did not "grow up" in the culture to adapt. There is a good amount of "we know best" mentality and a need for an infusion of new leadership. Attempts at this have failed in the past because it can be difficult to adapt to the Travelers way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maintain a value on employees and increase innovation to be more competitive.
