A good organization that values long-time employees

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at The Joint Commission full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGood work, great benefits, no regrets about choosing this place of employment

ConsThis organization is slow to change. Too many people have a "vote" so change does not happen as quickly as it should.

Advice to Senior ManagementWe spend too much time asking staff what they want...and then not doing it if it conflicts with priorities. Ask staff once, make decisions, and move on.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

God help you if you're not a "chosen one"...because no one else will.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at The Joint Commission full-time for more than 3 years

Pros-Easily identifiable name, prestigious organization
-Good benefits
-Decent salary and perks

Cons-Blatant favoritism between leadership and staff
-Bullying and intimidation is a way of life, despite their written "Safety Culture" list
-No chance for upward mobility if you're not a favorite, and expect to be sabotaged if you try to advance

Advice to Senior ManagementI have no advice for upper management because they're the fundamental problem with this organization. My advice to the president is to take a long hard look at your leadership and ask if these are the types of people that will bring in staff that's excited to carry on the mission of the org.

Very Poor Environment in the Accounts Receivable Dept.

Senior Accts Receivable Assistant (Former Employee)
Oak Brook, IL (US)

I worked at The Joint Commission full-time for more than a year

ProsNice location & building with parking garage, good health benefits.

ConsManagement & H/R do not follow through with resolving areas that need to be worked on. Poor management leads to micro-managing by employees which leads to a toxic environment. Even after several meetings with H/R, the problemed manager did not changed which forced three employees to leave within 4 months! If you are looking to join an orginazation who follows through with listening to their employees, this would not be the organization! H/R does not keep good records of all complaints either, some seem to have never been recorded.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave Managers who are experienced with how to manage people! There are so many deserving people with great management skills, why keep poor environments, make changes as promised. Employees shouldn't be exposed to terrible environments, managers need to get control of their departments & employees.

The Joint Commission is a great place to work at, and the work is very meaningful.

Associate Project Director (Current Employee)
Oakbrook Terrace, IL (US)

I have been working at The Joint Commission full-time for more than a year

Prosgood work-life balance, good benefits, flexible work schedule and telecommuting, collaborative and healthy work environment. Management strives to keep employees happy and reward effort and performance, although company policies surrounding career progression and compensation seem to be constrictive and dated.

ConsNot many opportunities for career progression; pay not necessarily driven by performance; slow salary progression; changes is slow.

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter retention policies(including career opportunities and quicker salary progression) for high-performing employees and to attract talent are desperately needed.

Accounts Receivable & Pricing Department - Very Poor Environment

Accounting Assistant (Former Employee)
Oakbrook Terrace, IL (US)

I worked at The Joint Commission part-time for more than 3 years

ProsNice Building and Cafeteria, Decent Benefits

ConsPoor Management, Non Trusting Environment, Employees who disrespect each other. Very unhealthy atmosphere to work in which makes for a long day. Employee turnover is high, 3 employess have left the A/R & Pricing Department in the past 8 months...one of those employees returned to a different department where management/atmosphere is good.

Advice to Senior ManagementBeware of what goes on outside in your department, this is a very important part of being a manager. Also build relationships with all the employees you manage not just a selected two who feed the manager with information whether that information be true or false. The Joint Commission needs to listen to their employees and make changes where necessary, instead it seems no one wants to deal with the problems....they need to "Walk the Talk".

long-time employee (13 years)

Associate Director (Current Employee)
Oak Brook, IL (US)

I have been working at The Joint Commission

ProsBenefits, reputation within healthcare industry. Joint Commission has a long standing history and is a known leader in setting standards. New CEO has been great asset to the enterprise and has brought great ideas forth about process improvement within the organization (....about time they practice what they preach!)

ConsJCR management very incompetent. Poor businesss skills. Morale is lower than ever (been there 13 years) with no signs of improving anytime soon.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed some fresh blood in upper management. Hopefully new CEO will recognize this very soon and bring in some more effective leaders.
