I have been working at Teekay

    Pros

Professionally run company that attracts high caliber of employees. There is a great deal of understanding and support for employees when faced with any type of challenge that life may throw at you. Self-initiative is rewarded.

    Cons

Over the years I have seen a fair amount of people leaving the company for other jobs and for various reasons. Many came back, others still think fondly of the company. This is a very solid employer.

I have been working at Teekay full-time

    Pros

Great flexibility. Ability to re-arrange work schedule to balance work and life.
Good benefits (although they could add a little more to be great).
The company is once again in growth mode.

    Cons

Not very many opportunities for advancement.
Employees work hard and often work long hours. it seems that sometimes only the biggest and the best get recognized for the contribution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Current CEO doesn't take the time to get to know the people. Previous CEO knew everyones name

    I worked at Teekay

    Pros

Structured compensation package, very transparent. Some staff are very nice and professional. Several people are very skilled.

    Cons

Leadership is inconsistent. Direction/expectations depend 100% on the person to whom you report and it can change regularly. Many poeple were inappropriate or immature; managment tolerated this. Restructuring is common and change seems nonsensical. HR has no power and barely any influence. Opportunties are about who you are friends with not what your capabilities are. Individualism is not welcomed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep an eye on your middle managment. Some of them are not upholding good values.

I worked at Teekay full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

One of the most international companies based in Vancouver, BC, with a truly global presence. Smart and driven management, who also seem to care about the well-being of staff. Interesting industry and market leader position within that industry. Great reputation within the industry.

    Cons

Investor-driven rather than customer driven. Investors are the target customers, and the company is increasingly run like an investment fund rather than an operating company. Very much a banking perspective on business - which makes sense since the company is run by a banker. This is negative, but only really if you would rather be in a strong customer-focused operating environment.

At / below market pay for Vancouver, but horribly under-paid on an international basis, which is where most of their competition is from. Limited upside for career progression - most younger employees have to leave for advancement, which is too bad since the rest of the company is solid.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider how financially-driven you are. It may make sense from an investor standpoint, but is it the right way to run what is still, in essence, an operating company with customers? Look at how you move younger employees through the organization, and how many you've lost along the way to international firms that actually provide competitive pay. Aside from that, keep it up.

I worked at Teekay full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent employee benefits, good bonus and company pension plan. Fresh fruit weekly and office support staff are very helpful.

    Cons

Internal employees are not valued as much as externally recruited employees. No commitment to promotion from within. Lacking feedback and progression planning.

A lot of overtime is expected. Not much work/life balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Departmental heads to review internal employees' potential for growth and promotion within the company.

I have been working at Teekay

    Pros

Good employee programs - health benefit, fresh fruit, good vacation and flexben, nice offices.
SOme great people and some very bright minds.

    Cons

Extremely competitive, plastic people. Tough enviornment. People lie and toss others under the bus to create their own advancement. "Stars" are people who fit the clique. Roles are poorly defined, feedback is withheld and reviews are set to be the same for everyone.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about fit and what you are really trying to hire and should be paying before you make the move. If you try to hire the "Best" regardless of real needs, you add to turnover.
Find out the real situation and get involved in what managers are doing. Do you know they are making the right decisions?

    I worked at Teekay

    Pros

Vancouver location is great for anyone in HR, IT and Accounting fields

    Cons

The company has restructured a few years ago, moving all operations and chartering functions to the regional offices. Therefore, not many opportunities for anyone pursuing a maritime career in Vancouver location.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    More self-awareness
