I have been working at SunTrust full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Can have a long term career in banking if you want it

    Cons

Very siloed, with little information sharing ........ need to know basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Very hard to have a 'team' spirit when management does not promote it with other than words.
Stop outsourcing jobs to India, it makes it very hard to get work done with communication and time zones.

    I worked at SunTrust

    Pros

Banking hours and holidays are great. It's rare to be asked to work more than 40 hrs per week. There are many required training sessions to attend.

    Cons

The ability to grow in your career is almost impossible. A long road to get where I wanted to be. It is also hard to get a decent salary raise once you are hired so ask for it firmly up front.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Weed out the weak links in middle management so that a more visible career path is available to dedicated achievers in the ranks.

    Pros

Good training environment and understandable goals

    Cons

Intense sales goals that seemed unrealistic at times

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop stressing managers who then stress employees and therefore contributes to some questionable behavior

    I worked at SunTrust

    Pros

The nicest people in the world work at SunTrust. TRULY, authentically nice. SunTrust switched from a mission statement to a PURPOSE drive company in early 2013 and the concept and ideology were well supported and well embraced. PLEASE review SunTrust's purpose statement before every interview: it is what this company lives by and the cornerstone of its culture. VERY IMPRESSIVE and again, authentic. It was a privilege to work for SunTrust Bank!

    Cons

Low pay; very difficult to migrate through the organization (even vertically) without specific industry experience. IE: If you had Commercial Lending experience AND were successful in your role, it was still very difficult to be considered for a role in Treasury Mgt, for ex, simply because you did not have Treasury experience. Sad to say, the company lost/looses a lot of talent because they don't promote, reward and recognize talent more actively from within. SunTrust also lacks a 'Leadership Track' or internal mentoring & performance management program that outlines what needs to be done (Knowledge. Skills, Abilities, Licensing, et al.) to move to a new business line or role. Like most companies, at mid management and below its a case of who you know/who likes you rather than how ambitious and skilled you may be to move to the next level or the next business line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please see above. There is such great talent that LEAVES SunTrust - its puzzling! You are a superior company in many ways - but people management and creating paths to promotability are not among them. Consider that a large majority of employees want to stay on board, want to work with SunTrust for a lifetime!, and are proud to be associated with SunTrust. But many times employees get 'poached': for a better career path not just better pay, Consider having employees work directly with management to identify 'next' career options within this fine company.
