I have been working at Sun Microsystems

    Pros

I work in technical field support... the effort and assistance that other tech support engineers provide to each other is wonderful...lots of sharing and support when your stuck onsite at 2am with a RAID controller that wont recognize any disks...Pretty good knowledgebase with record of previous calls and root cause summaries with work arounds

    Cons

There are simpy too many layers of management... our backline technical support is too weak to actually help with problem escalations in the field... the remaining Product technical support engineers are too busy and it has impacted customer satisfaction. Hence the decline in revenue and customer sales and loss of service contracts...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Layoff some fat in middle-management

I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

I had wonderful co-workers and managers, and got fantastic experience working on a variety of projects.

    Cons

Management seemed "disorganized" and "unfocused" at times. It was also hard to get any continuity going on projects because there were so many reorgs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you'd focused on business at hand, Sun might never have been acquired by Oracle.

    I worked at Sun Microsystems

    Pros

Cool technology, beautiful campus & perks, Flexible work hours, telecommute, drop in offices around the Bay Area, meet a lot of smart people around.

    Cons

There was Constant reorganization, leadership changes, fear of lay offs so it was hard to focus, lack of clear direction from management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's too late, bought by Oracle.

    Pros

Contracted with Sun for half a year and enjoyed the team spirit, professionalism, and the ease they provided while working remotely.Would work a contract for this company again in a heartbeat.

    Cons

Occasionally unable to reach the coordinator at times, but since they managed multiple projects, it was satisfactorily handled by their assistant.
