Current Employee - Area Systems Support Engineer - Customer Field Service

I have been working at Sun Microsystems

    Pros

I work in technical field support... the effort and assistance that other tech support engineers provide to each other is wonderful...lots of sharing and support when your stuck onsite at 2am with a RAID controller that wont recognize any disks...Pretty good knowledgebase with record of previous calls and root cause summaries with work arounds

    Cons

There are simpy too many layers of management... our backline technical support is too weak to actually help with problem escalations in the field... the remaining Product technical support engineers are too busy and it has impacted customer satisfaction. Hence the decline in revenue and customer sales and loss of service contracts...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Layoff some fat in middle-management

    I worked at Sun Microsystems

    Pros

Sun Microsystems was one of those companies that a person can look back upon and say, "those were the good ol' days." The culture was very good, the work was interesting and the pay was on par with the industry. No, it wasn't perfect. What company is? But Sun was novel in many areas such as company-wide work from home policies before it became trendy. It was a sad day when they were acquired. Many Sun-Alumni will agree that our network is still strong and supportive of one another. When you come across someone who used to work at Sun, even if you never worked with her before, a knowing smile will come across your face as you remember your time there.

    Cons

Leadership sometimes didn't listen to new or novel ways to grow the market.
