Great Company

Manager (Current Employee)
Ottawa, ON

I have been working at Subway full-time for more than a year

ProsIt`s a growing brand and company. Focused on growth and building sales and stores, Subway is a very well run and organized business. Treats the staff and franchisees very well. CEO is very present and a positive person.

ConsHours can be long, evening and weekends work it required. You must be willing to work hard and spend time on growing your business. Also can be a very physical job as you are on your feet all day and have to work quickly.

Not enough employees but allows you to gain experience (depends on the subway)

Subway Sandwich Artist (Current Employee)
Vancouver, BC

I have been working at Subway part-time for less than a year

Pros- free 6inch sub
- unlimited drinks
- better resume due to handling all tasks (eg. cashier, restocking, washing containers, etc.)
- multitasking & memorization (of subs)
- being watched and getting a call if something is done poorly/wrong

Cons- not enough employees
- no real break
- being watched and getting a call if something is done poorly/wrong

Advice to Senior ManagementWe employees try out best, but sometimes we make mistakes. It makes us more nervous if we are being watched on camera every minute and getting a phone call if we do something poorly. Please also have some document for us to sign so we know what we can do and what we can't. I think the management should be better....

I worked at Subway full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat staff, just like family, the customers are great. Most of the time :) Free 6" and drink..

ConsWork long hours on your feet. No breaks, and if you want to go further in the company.. their is no where to go.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave enough staff, so your employee's can actually take "law" breaks.. an 8 hr shift has 30min and 2 15min.

I worked at Subway part-time for more than 3 years

ProsCan't think of any that would be above any other fast food company. Not a lot of required time commitment. Can work few hours.

ConsManagement was terrible, plain and simple. They show no respect for their employees, there really needs to be some sort of training that themselves and the owners are required to do. The reason I say that they should be training for management is because it reflects in the way their employees deal with customers. Employees are made miserable when they come in to work and then subsequently offer poor customer service. Minimum wage, which is what's expected when working in this industry. Another issue was because management was so cheap they often under-shifted employees, meaning that sometimes you would be working alone when it could reasonably be expected to have 2-3 employees working to meet the demand of customers. Line ups out the door happened all the time at the Subway I worked at, which frequently led to walk-out customers.
As far as career opportunities, that's laughable, go work at McDonalds or some other minimum wage place, because you're stuck in your position (the bottom) for life if you work at subway.
Shifts were also terrible. They were always 3-5 hours long (in order to avoid having paid breaks, or giving the opportunity to break at all for employees). I frequently got the closing shifts which were 4-5 hours, no breaks, working alone, on Thursday-Saturday. So I rarely had an opportunity for a social life since my weekend nights were spent at Subway until 1 am, and it wasn't because I asked for those shifts.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt wouldn't be such a terrible place if management wasn't so disrespectful.
