I worked at Stop & Shop

    Pros

Quarterly raises, associates you work with are pleasant and down to earth.

    Cons

Training is skimmed over, and is usually where a lot of problems stem from. Employees being improperly trained on how to perform.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to train each and every individual. Incompetence usually starts at the top of this company and trickles down to mid level management and so on to associates.

I have been working at Stop & Shop

    Pros

The hours are long and repetitive the union blows but for a part time gig its not bad

    Cons

The union protect the slugs who don't do anything as a part timer you are expected to do your work plus the work of the full timers cause they don't do anything but complain about how the part timers suck

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the union and hire more help to give better customer service that you currently are giving to the consumer

I have been working at Stop & Shop full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

If you accept that "if you take the kings shilling, you do the kings bidding" and work hard for the results that they state are needed at that time, you can go from p/t to f/t to salary position. There is a career ladder. It requires that you be a good hard worker who is honest and patient and willing to have an open mind to what you do and where you do it.
support for part time work while enrolled in college or p/t work between semesters. There is a fast track if you are deemed to be worth investing the training in for them. In last six years have seen several young people be promoted from clerk to dept head, dept heads to assistant store managers and further to store managers. It happens but you have got to earn it. Great pay once you are salaried f/t . No end of opportunity to advance, just keep an open mind on what and where you do it. very strong diversity policy. No one will harass you, those in protected status groups can be assured they can advance along with anyone else, no bar to advancement if you are really good at what you do for them. tuition reimbursement, vacation generous after 5 years, health plan, 401k with match, sick leave, training..
The reviews in glassdoor are almost all lower level dept and store folks, there is a lot of chaff and not much wheat written in the reviews. Have extensive experience in the food industry and no retail supermarket company emphasizes Food Safety like Stop and Shop. They have the cleanest stores and the coldest foods. like the ol' blue eyes sang: "if you can make there you can make it anywhere". If you are smart, trainable, have good people skills, can take initiative, have the patience of a Saint, take satisfaction from doing a great job with minimal /no guidance and have minimal or no college this company can advance your career in 5-10 years from p/t to salaried making over 45K/year.
      Have recommended employment to friends.

    Cons

hourly unions have a lot of dead wood, especially in long island ny.
major decisions are made by faceless folks in Carlisle PA offices or Holland. Yes the dutch equity holding company ahold owns them and yes have to make wall st happy with fiscal picture, but where don't you have that now a days.
If you want a steady non challenging 9-5 monday to friday do as little as possible to get by, this company is not for you. Work one day a weekend and get a day/usually wed off. Have to work some part of many holidays.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut the dead wood from hourly ranks and cut the brain dead slackers in assistant manager slots. There is a notable number of assistant store managers who seem to be minimally gifted with intelligence, grace ,initiative, humility and honesty but there are so many more that are great to work with. Find a way to get the corporate and store management out into the depts everyday so they see the actual conditions in the perishable depts and make corrections asap.

I worked at Stop & Shop part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay starts at minimum wage in most departments but steady raises, health benefits for part-time and full-time employees, sick and vacation pay, time and a half pay after 3 years working

    Cons

upper management interaction with lower-level employees could be better, lack of training for new hires

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Stop & Shop part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The best reason to work at this place is the opportunity it offers to grow professionally while I'm going to school.

    Cons

The worst thing which I don't like is that some managers are aware of coworkers who are not willing to work at all and they still tolerate those coworkers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire young individuals who are willing to learn and work.

I have been working at Stop & Shop part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

benefits for part-timers. vacation and personal days given.

    Cons

I don't know what Stop&Shop the person who said that we get quarterly raises works at, but my store gets one raise a year. Start at minimum wage $8.00, and get a 30 cent a year raise. Took 5 years to make $10.00 per hour. For the work I do it is totally pitiful the wage I receive. I do more work in 4 hours then some do in 24 hours. Not fair. No recognition or thanks for doing a good job. Also, when the minimum wage goes, are wage doesn't adjust.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Say thank-you once in a while for doing a good job. Fight for better wages.

The dutch are ruining stop and shop !

I have been working at Stop & Shop

    Pros

This is a very strong company to work for if you can get full time, kids say thank you to obama thanks obama. Stop and shop is a really good company if you are career driven you can make it there plus having ahold on your resume is a good customer service experience to have

    Cons

again thanks to obama they are really cutting hours in all stores by more than 50% of last year stats which is unfair full timers are being drained of moral and punished if not producing what or rather how they want it, it is sad i love this company i really enjoyed working for them and was looking forward to being part of a manager team but they have taken their decision making and creativity from managers and dont want them to think just work .

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Strong company but losing the big picture, the customers and their associates this company has invested so much on upper management from of all chains a and p a failing chain, bankruptcy, poor managers. These are the people making changes and decisions cutting hours almost 50% in all depts. And making more paperwork to watch there money you guys seem to want to make your money on cutting hrs and benefits of associates not making money on sales. The more you cut the less time we have to engage with customers you are losing sight of what you set out for years ago moral suffers sales suffer than your looking at - 10% to 18% return across the board

I have been working at Stop & Shop part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Union, paid holidays, paid vacation for part timers as well as full , weekly pay, some good management, friendly co workers, affordable health insurance

    Cons

Feel of store varies by location, promotions are based on seniority not skill, full timers are paid less than what is realistic until promoted to high positions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There's not much of a point in this due to the union being involved in most things.
