I worked at Stonington Public Schools full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Provides a good education to students

    Cons

Cronyism abounds. Backstabbing hostile work environment. Union favoritism. Use of scheduled, class size, and teacher evaluations to harass, intimidate, and retaliate against anyone who doesn't bow down to the whims and friends of the administration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop allowing rumor and hearsay to influence who you are going to harass.

    Pros

Salary is good and budget is good.

    Cons

Powerful click and backstabbing, culture of intimidation, the town votes down the budget more often than not. If they can hire someone for less, they will find a way to get rid of you and it won't be pleasant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop creating a hostile work environment. If you want something open an honest dialog rather than harass and intimidate. We are not mindreaders.

    Pros

The Stonington Public Schools is very serious about student achievement and providing the best education for their students. Test scores are consistently higher than both the CT and national averages.

    Cons

The budget is often, almost every year shot down in referendum thus creating an avenue for teachers to loose their positions despite tenure or performance. The practice of handing out pink slips and while shopping for lower paid teachers is alive and well. If a teacher is not liked by one of the local teachers (even SEA members and officers) other method are used to drive the teacher from the job. Teachers leave due to job security issues, harassment, and retaliation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep paying your lawyers and insurance because one of these days you will need both.
