Great benefits and opportunity to grow within the company

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at State Farm full-time for more than 8 years

ProsThis company believes in its people and provide opportunities for development and growth based on your work performance. I started as an entry level employee making entry level wages and after a year was given a developmental opportunity which led into a permanent position. Shortly after that, I was given a second developmental opportunity which also led to a permanent position. Both times I received a salary increase. Apart from that, you get a performance evaluation every year which allows for a pay rate increase based on your job performance. My schedule was flexible and vacation and personal time is well respected.

ConsDepending on your manger/supervisor, you may or may not have the best opportunities. Some management is more qualified than others to really provide leadership. The majority is great, but there are those few that do not belong in a leadership role. As long as you have a true leader, you will love this company.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep a closer eye on your 1st level management and make sure that they do actually provide guidance and leadership and are an expert in their area of leadership. It can be discouraging to work for someone who you believe is not a true leader. I was laid off due to the company relocating outside of my city. I was very happy with my career and would have planned to retire from there if the circumstances were different. Great company to work for.

Fast paced, must be able to keep up

Insurance Representative (Former Employee)
Minneapolis, MN (US)

I worked at State Farm full-time for more than a year

ProsBig potential to get an agency if able to produce, otherwise, no future in Minnesota currently. All the support offices consolidated out of state.

ConsCulture is among agents is awful. They just walk around with measuring sticks and size each other up.

This a non-cyclical business offering products that one is often required to purchase.

Agent (Current Employee)
Austin, TX (US)

I have been working at State Farm full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe benefits are good, the income potential great, and the education second to none.

ConsThe systems used by the company are not user friendly, and often create inefficiencies such that one's work day always extends past 8 hours.

Advice to Senior ManagementVerify that the computer interface programs you put in place are intuitive and user friendly. If our products are not to be seen as a commodity offer more options so the product can be "customized" to fit the client’s needs. Pricing without options does allow for product commoditization.

ProsGREAT benefits.

Company bonus
Christmas presents
CCC Sales call center part time positions (in other locations) can create full time income.

ConsSome of the workloads/schedules are egregious. It can cause work/life to be out of balance. In some areas the care for the individual is gone, they have so many people looking for work sometimes you can feel devalued.
Company restructuring can make things very volatile.

Advice to Senior ManagementPhones have to be answered by people. People have to have lives, rethink your schedules to accommodate more back to back days off and less 10 hour weekend days that include both Saturday and Sunday. Happy employees make for stable, hard working, lasting employees.
