Hired on a promise to work in a fun growing atmosphere with great training, there was growth but no training.

I worked at Starr Companies full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    nice people
    decent bonus
    good happy hours
for those who eat sleep and breath insurance like ceo, you can make a lot of money

    Cons

systems are stuck in the 1980;s, too many problems
everyone has a AIG entitlement to them
the new systems barely work any better than the old systems they were implemented to replace.
too many growing pains with a new company
there just learning there processes for audit and keep changing it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have better training programs with class room study.
have a more open door policy.
don't expect everyone to answer emails at 9 at night

I worked at Starr Companies as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

A growing company, a great place to excel, and a great starting spot. It's a company where you go when you want your career to grow and develop.

    Cons

I was only an intern there so I didn't get too much indepth exposure to the innerworkings of the company.

    Keep going

I worked at Starr Companies as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The office culture at Starr was uplifting and encouraged a team culture. Senior leadership was more than willing to provide mentorship.

    Cons

Was given mostly busy work. Internship program as a whole sought to benefit its employees, but my certain department hadn't caught onto the holistic view that the program targeted.

I worked at Starr Companies as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

Decent, competitive pay. Good company values but its basically any office with loads of office politics and nepotism. Almost everyone is someone related within the company (its freaky). But its not a bad place to start off!

    Cons

No leadership. You have to work very hard here and the mix of people were okay. The quality of management and leadership needs to be stepped up in groups.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tell your managers to wake up and become a leader in their group and lead their group properly. Communication is key.

    Exceptionally bad experience

I have been working at Starr Companies full-time

    Pros

Compensation was ok. 7 hour work day. Lots of holidays.

    Cons

The culture is antiquated and fear based. Nothing is ever put in writing. Sr managers are arrogant and hostile. Unprofessional behavior is tolerated and sometimes encouraged. It is simply an intolerable environment.

    Pros

Pay/raises/bonuses are good, semi-flexible hours, 7 hour workday

    Cons

Medical and dental plans are expensive, company culture is stuffy and odd, processes are antiquated (not paperless), no official training, some departments are grossly understaffed while others are overstaffed.

    Pros

    Ok salary
    It ends there
This place is not company just a business. A majority of underwriters in most divisions are unhappy.

    Cons

    Senior managemenT
HR is a walking d&o waiting to happen
    Unprofessional
    Bonuses are embarrassing
    No incentives
    Not paperless
    Hank Greenberg is CEO
    Anti-women

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not really sure how you can save this company

I worked at Starr Companies full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Initial salary offering; decent 401K benefits if you could last five years at this company

    Cons

Unable to use your vacation time; micro managed; severe lack of communication; practices border on unethical; no opportunities for development and career advancement; company has poor future outlook; no peer support; nepotism involving senior level's kids, and their significant others; best bet is to make some money and network another job elsewhere

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Aging executive management needs to realize they have to pass the torch to someone else pretty soon.
