I worked at Starr Companies as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

The office culture at Starr was uplifting and encouraged a team culture. Senior leadership was more than willing to provide mentorship.

    Cons

Was given mostly busy work. Internship program as a whole sought to benefit its employees, but my certain department hadn't caught onto the holistic view that the program targeted.

MRG Gives Scathing Insults to Employees on Conference Call

I have been working at Starr Companies

    Pros

After his call that his employees aren't making him enough money? None.

    Cons

See above. He personally signs off on each new hire. Yet he ripped anyone who dared to speak during the call. Some regions grew by $50M or more. All MRG could say was "and are you happy with that?" Well yes. But no one dares to speak to The Great Oz in a way he doesn't want to hear. Here's a New Idea. Train your managers to be more creative and more willing to help and/or allow seasoned underwriters to do their job. We have a wealth of experience. But in some cases management wants to hold control so tight as to not allow the production you're looking for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

See above. If an UW isn't producing, and s/he has a proven track record, perhaps it's the manager. I see it EVERY SINGLE DAY. Talk to the Worker Bee's and let them tell you what's going on, without fear of repercussion.

While I can't speak for everyone, I will tell you your message was NOT well received by your employees in my region. You don't give a rats behind how you treat and use your employees. Some leader. You're supposed to inspire. But you choose to intimidate and threaten. Do you really think that's the best way to make us more productive? A lot of us stood behind you during the whole AIG scandal. And many of us believed in you enough to come to Starr. I'm not the only one who regrets signing on again. How does that make the broker community feel when they have a new UW every couple of months. Vote of No Confidence.

I realize you will fire me if you find out my identity. I have no doubt. But I stand for my fellow employees. Those who are busting their humps for you but who are too afraid to tell you what we are all thinking.

Try helping instead of intimidating. Try praising instead of condemning and threatening.

I was told I can't use fac. Now you're telling us to use it. Obviously that hadn't trickled down to your management. We are only as good as those who lead us.

    Respectfully
A Coward who won't sign this note.

I have been working at Starr Companies full-time

    Pros

Compensation was ok. 7 hour work day. Lots of holidays.

    Cons

The culture is antiquated and fear based. Nothing is ever put in writing. Sr managers are arrogant and hostile. Unprofessional behavior is tolerated and sometimes encouraged. It is simply an intolerable environment.

I worked at Starr Companies full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Initial salary offering; decent 401K benefits if you could last five years at this company

    Cons

Unable to use your vacation time; micro managed; severe lack of communication; practices border on unethical; no opportunities for development and career advancement; company has poor future outlook; no peer support; nepotism involving senior level's kids, and their significant others; best bet is to make some money and network another job elsewhere

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Aging executive management needs to realize they have to pass the torch to someone else pretty soon.

I worked at Starr Companies full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Relaxed atmosphere, good local management, good local people on the ground. The company is new so they are still working through growing pains and their horrible systems.

    Cons

No direction, Nepotism, Senior management are incompetent and don't know how to lead. Took my resignation like a break up. Not only asked me to leave (which was expected) but then did not compensate me for the two weeks notice i provided them (unexpected and very unprofessional for company that wants to be taken seriously)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees with a little more respect
