    Pros

Midtown Manhattan location and good medical benefits.

    Cons

The CEO of this company is currently suing the US Government for $40 billion over how AIG was handled after the 2009 US economic recovery efforts. The president of HR most recently left the company after 1 year to take on another opportunity . The company/ technology/ mindset is stuck in the 80's which is poorly managed with low budgets and a young non team-oriented company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to completely plan and overhaul company and budget the departments more effectively.

    Pros

The talent pool is lacking, if you have a point 4 IQ you will be ahead of the curve. There really are no Pros.

    Cons

Where to begin....Management is absolutely horrible. Starr seems to only hire incompetent people. No one is held accountable for anything. HR is a complete disaster. The talented people do not stay long. A lot of old men walking around doing nothing except talking about how great they are and waiting for the dining hall to open. No succession plan. No flex working hours. Completely old fashion, they do not want to grow with the times. No investment in training. Forced to share office space which created a bed bug issue. Not a nice place, everyone is miserable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wake up and get with the times. Hire a consulting firm to come in and clean house.

    Pros

invested in training younger people, wealth of knowledge from ex-AIG employees. Fabulous benefits.

    Cons

Very disorganized, must be able to deal with this and adapt.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As we grow, don't let the company become silo-ed as it was at AIG.

    Pros

Pros? You're frickin kidding me, right? Apparently Cancer doesn't get you extra days off to spend with family.

    Cons

Micro management. Trainees are yelled at, literally, and humiliated by assistants and backed by management. Seriously? They make promises which they never intend to keep, and don't. If you took the time, and asked the right people and questions. You would understand why Starr is the dumping ground for the AIG cast offs who no one else would ever hire. This is from a management prospective of course. Assistants get parking paid for. 30 year veterans and former managers are brought in at half salaries, two week vacation and no parking. Before accepting a job here ask yourself, "how desperate am I"?

    I worked at Starr Companies

    Pros

Basic salary is ok but overall remuneration (incl bonus, other perks etc) is 4th quartile, London offices are well located.

    Cons

Exceptionally high turnover of staff in London, set up new lines of business only to close them down soon after, focus is entirely on enormous and unsustainable growth in the most competitive stage of the cycle.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There's little you can do if everything is driven from the US

    Pros

    Compensation and health benefits

    Cons

Very political environment with an AIG mentality. This will inhibit the company from becoming a sought-after place to work for. Management not flexible at all with work arrangements, telecommuting, etc. In this day and age, every company needs to be supportive of telecommunication and flexibile schedules.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company needs to improve flexibility. You will not attract or keep good talented workers if management is not willing to move into the current century.

Taking 'At Will Employment' to a new low

I worked at Starr Companies full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive salary, good medical and dental benefits. Good opportunities to learn about the insurance industry.

    Cons

Where shall I begin? This company is a mess, and to say that it's toxic is being kind.

As many have mentioned, Starr has serious issues with its managent and its HR department. There is a severe lack of communication, and no protocol in place. It's gut wrenching seeing many who work hard and do what they need to do to save money out of respect for their employer, to be threatened and even terminated without cause. Many underwriters, adjusters, and staff receive little to no bonus, however many in management travel like rock stars and abuse expenses. There is absolutely no support for mid management and support staff either. Very little opportunity for development and growth, and no recognition for hard work.

Starr did start off on the right foot, but this company is now a shell of what it used to be. There is also far too much loyalty to ex-longtime AIG employees, despite that some of these employees lack the skill set needed for this century. HR especially needs to take note about labor law abuses in some of the departments. Some staff work through lunch daily, and are denied vacation requests. I know some staff can't even take off when they are sick. HR needs to step up and ensure the laws are followed, and stop catering to unreasonable people's demands (who are unfortunately in management!)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not sure how this company can be fixed--executive management is a big part of the problem.
