Current Employee - Senior Engineer in Sunnyvale, CA (US)

    Pros

    1. work-life balance. for people who have kids this is a great place to work for because you can use your kids as excuse to go home early and take days off. single people can't do either of those.
    2. most people are nice people, but not all.

    Cons

    1. bad senior management. there is absolutely no (or little) respect for engineers or people who actually do the work.
    2. no career advancement. there are way too many vps and managers in this company so unless they get fired there is no way people can get promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

need to learn to treat the employees with respect.

Current Employee - Senior Manager in Sunnyvale, CA (US)

    Pros

Renewed executive management team has been in control since 2009. The company is on a growth path now and investing in new memory technology as well as entirely new product categories. The company is providing employees with new and more opportunities for professional development and training. The people here are amazing - some of the smartest and nicest people I've been around.

    Cons

Pace of change and growth could be faster. It is not friendly environment if you like to telecommute.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide employees a bit more flexibility in working, like flex schedules and telecommuting options. Company is quite behind in this respect compared to other valley companies.

One cog in the big machine

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee  in  Sunnyvale, CA (US)
Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Sunnyvale, CA (US)

    Pros

Immediate middle managers are respectful to engineers. Work life balance is decent. Immediate team and coworkers feel like a close knit family. Pay is ok. Do a good enough job to be useful to your boss and they will keep you around and give you job security. Spansion is open to switching your role within the company if you are dissatisfied with the current one and want to try something different.

    Cons

High level executives at vp level view engineers as expendable labor. They manage with negative feedback and like to instill fear among employees. The company culture is all about making aggressive deadlines set by upper management and causing engineers to sacrifice quality of their work. Each department is pit against each other with their own agendas/deadlines so there are inter-dept conflicts. Not much room to grow within a role. It has a big company feel where you will only be working on one portion of a project and feel like just a cog in the machine.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To the upper executives. Try ruling with positive feedback. Motivate employees with something other then fear and minimize any abusive yelling.

A Company at an Inflection Point

    • Culture & Values
    • Career Opportunities
Current Employee - Manager  in  Sunnyvale, CA (US)
Current Employee - Manager in Sunnyvale, CA (US)

    Pros

    - Opportunity abounds -- for the company and for the individual who is motivated and inspiring
    - Smart, but humble executive management
    - Inspirational, smart, and genuinely nice CEO (rare combo)
    - I have a superior manager - one of the best in my career and also one of the best at the company. However, I've noticed that there are a lot of really good managers here. How often do you hear that?!

    Cons

    - IT support is pretty poor
    - Still a few people from the AMD days who've been through the worst of times here that need to recalibrate their enthusiasm up a notch.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Jump in all the way with the HMI vision. Invest enough in the disruptive innovation to get us to the next phase. It's the right time.
