    Awesome company to work for they are very flexible and understanding. Great team members to work with.

    Older company so the atmosphere is a bit dry and boring.

    They'll lay off after your 90 day probation if there aren't any positions available for hire.

    Pros

    For the love of the business agriculture! A dying breed We need to work hard to bring back the principals on which Southern States was founded

    Cons

    The cookie cutter stores do not cater to all clientele. The merchandise needs to be based on the demographics of the store. Stop bring the general store with candy on pegs and sell some real farming needs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop employee shopping at your competition. They have some of the worst customer service and product knowledge I have ever witnessed. If Southern States is that threatened by the enemy and the only way to fight competition is to steal their employees ,then things are looking very dismal for Southern States. When I worked for the company I prided myself in my job and the company. After Southern States drafted in TSC & Lowes recruits, I compared my last months to our political administration......neither had any leadership skills... But power hungry and full of empty promises

    Pros

    Work hours are 8:00 to 4:30. They are flexible when it comes to taking time off for appointments.

    Cons

    Benefits package is awful.
    Management values tenure and friendship over ability and professionalism.
    Too much gossip.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Hiring internally is great when the candidate is actually qualified for the position being filled. There are too many mid level managers less qualified to lead a team than their analysts.

    Pros

    The flexibility of being a sales rep is wonderful, benefits of having a car, phone, and other electronics are a huge plus. Most accounts are great to work with, developing both work relationships and personal friendships.

    Cons

    Many lonely hours driving on the road, inconsistent sales goals, and feeling of "always working". The company is not very progressive or quickly receptive to those working in the field.

    Pros

    Company attracts quality individuals at the store level.

    Cons

    Lack of consistent direction and leadership from corporate management. Company lacks focus and is increasingly relying on underperforming management imported from outside the company for direction. Company culture is in constant flux and no longer reflects the noble values of the mission statement. Southern States can still rely on it's employees but they can no longer rely on Southern States. Very likely the company will soon begin shrinking back to it's wholesale/milling core even as it amateurishly pursues retail expansion and continues driving away talent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Refocus company on the values that made Southern States successful - create a consistent company culture. Reform hiring practices as imported management has damaged company culture almost beyond repair.

    Pros

    The people were down to earth and very welcoming.

    Cons

    I had nothing to do and got paid $13/hour as an accounting intern. The program was new and there was not much structure.

    To keep interns, please give them work to do.

    I think for my area its one of the best paying jobs.

    Its Seasonal work only and that is the only con.
