I have been working at Schneider National full-time for more than a year
Pros – I work at the corporate center as a customer service rep for intermodal, and there are a lot of good people who care heavily about what they do.
Lots of room for advancement/inter-office department transferirng.
New computer systems bring a good deal of visibility to the average user, makes the job easier and more accurate.
Cons – 1st shift in particular has a high level of stress, i've heard stories of people who go home and cry after work. Everyone seems to think that their freight is the most important, so there can be serious issues that arise if driver capacity becomes a problem.
All departments seem to be understaffed, which leads to long hold times and over worked employees, as well as mandatory over time and customer freight that gets "lost in the system" (missed pickup or deliveries that sit for a week or more).
Advice to Senior Management – Your lowest level staff is amazing, and that needs to be noticed. Some of your middle management is atrocious and don't know the new systems or (terrifyingly) what their employees actually do in some respects. In my particular area, projects are often started, and then forgotten or given up on, management calls for meetings or training sittings, and then ignore them, only to be confused and outraged when the problems don't get solved. I think many departments need a good overhaul, they aren't evolving with the rest of the company. Management is the biggest issue for SNI, in my humble opinion.
Oh, and take better care of our drivers. They are the ones that move our company forward.

I have been working at Schneider National full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – 1) In my position, I get better than average home time of an OTR truck driver.
2) Above average wages.
3) Late model equipment.
4) Computerized logging.
5) 24 hr. Driver assoc. support.
Cons – 1) Expensive lackluster healthcare.
2) New "onguard" tech. unreliable and aggravating.
3) Maintenance can cause costly delays.
4) Once driver reaches senior level, no room for advancement or pay raise.
Advice to Senior Management – Consider taking senior drivers to new levels of career advancement and better pay for years of service.

Pros – Chicago Intermodal Fleet. People are always willing to help. Pay is decent for a newer drive starting at $0.34 (+0.07 performance pay based on safety metrics). Weekly paychecks will be about 700-1000 for regional drivers who are just starting.
Cons – Parking lot and Operating Center gravel lots are like land mine craters...drive slow. Much older trucks in this fleet...dented and banged up from years 2006- present of use and intermodal close quarters incidents. Newer truck coming in by end of summer 2013- they look like they do not have in-cab a/c which would mean that the truck will need to be idled in the summertime if a/c is needed while you sleep which can count against performance metrics.
COMMUNICATE TROUGH THE QUALLCOMM MESSAGE FEATURE. It helps you as the driver have proof of what you are doing or need in writing. If calling into your leader first send a msg on th QUALLCOMM and follow up by phone (avg hold time is 15min)
Advice to Senior Management – Stop laughing and talking to each other while I stand in the office with my cell phone on hold in your call que trying to see why it takes so long before someone answers the phone. I have done this each time I've come into the office to scan paperwork.

I worked at Schneider National full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Stable income at a powerful company
Cons – The company treats people with disrespect while pretending to care about them. Customers in this industry also treat people with disrespect. The company is constantly messing with the pay system. Sometimes the pay works out in your favor and sometimes it doesn't. Your time is not respected.
Advice to Senior Management – Purge management at all levels and rehire people who care.

Pros – -Almost guaranteed that you will be hired as soon as you get your CDL. Only two people I know of weren't able to get hired; the first was obese and could not pass the physical(you have to be able to get down and under the trailer to properly inspect your equipment), and the other was unable to perform a 90 backing procedure. Other than that, you're pretty much golden!
-I get all the miles I need, my DBL(fancy name for the dispatcher) does a fair job of keeping me rolling with whatever loads are available in my area.
-Newer equipment. I was able to get into a 2 year old Cascadia after only 8 months with the company, and they seem to be trying to roll all of the older trucks out in favor of newer trucks and trailers.
Cons – -Pay caps way too early. I've been with the company only a year and a half, and already my pay has capped at $0.36/mile. That's a pretty low figure compared to other companies.
-Insurance is obscenely expensive, with high deductible. I'm paying out $200-$300 a week for my insurance, and still have to pay a $5000 annual deductible before the medical will even cover anything. Seeing as I don't regularly fall down stair wells, I have yet to actually pay this deductible to be able to make use of the insurance I am paying so much for.
-Software is bugged beyond belief. For starters, it is quite obvious that no driver input was used in the design of the software, as many necessary features were completely left out. And it is a coin toss whether your estimates will actually be recognized in the system. Most of the time I update an ETA, when I get to the customer it asks why I'm late, even though my Qualcomm shows that I'm a half hour early to my pickup.
-DBL's give no support, and are often extremely rude. I moved a few months ago, and asked how to update my address with the company. All I got back was"update on the website". The website is a disorganized monstrosity, and there was no option I could find to update that information. I finally had to go into the office and ask, and point out that they couldn't find the ability to update either before they finally did the update for me. As for rude, if I am late to the customer for pickup or delivery for ANY reason, even equipment failure, I get screamed at. This is probably my #1 reason for looking for another company right now.
-Technology is continually getting "upgraded", but the upgrades always have many issues long after they've gone live, and it takes several months before they bother to fix them. Current favorite is an "upgrade" to keep the truck from idling except in extreme temperatures(below 20 or above 80 F). Problem that they failed to anticipate, however, was that they installed the sensor next to the exhaust manifold, so it was reading the significantly higher temps radiating off of the exhaust. We went pretty much all of winter without anyone able to idle unless the temp was below 5 F.
Advice to Senior Management – Stop throwing out all of these random upgrades! Focus on fixing what software we are currently using instead of flushing an investment into replacements.
With as much focus as there is on safety, start putting some requirements on making the workplace a bit less hostile. If I wanted to get yelled at for things out of my control I'd have remained in the Navy for better pay and significantly better benefits.

Pros – Cafeteria has a decent salad bar. Some nice people. Leadership pretty much lets you do your job.
Cons – Horrible technology will make you want to pull your hair out. Systems don't work. Pretty much total chaos all the time.
