ProsGood environment, good setting, good funding

ConsNo quick progression, projects far from academic projects

It will change the way you think about science.....it's all about the big picture

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    ProsGood resource
Good opportunities to present your work
    Being surrounded by great minds
Having free access to the WT scientific conferences and courses
    Talks from world leaders

ConsBureaucracy. It's hard to climb the ladder.
Only Faculty can have home office project licences and grants.
Post-docs can only stay 3 years.
Salaries aren't great - in line with Cambridge Uni.

    Good but not amazing

Software Developer (Current Employee) Cambridge, East of England, England (UK)

Pros- Nice campus with lots of sports facilities and canteen
    - Free shuttle buses to Cambridge and surrounding villages
    - Not very stressful environment
    - Lots of talks given by guests from all over the world
    - Interesting work environment

Cons- A bit disorganized - starting from HR, IT
    - Annoying rule not letting you take holidays when going away for a conference - you need to leave at most 2 days before, and 2 after(no matter if you travel 10h-15h) and even 2 days is hard to obtain
    - Hard to obtain the hardware configuration that you want for your work machine - they have only standard things they want to give and nothing else
    - Old IT infrastructure (not the most modern -- annoying sometimes)
    - Very Perl-oriented

Advice to Senior ManagementDrop the "no holidays after/before conference" rule!

    Good facilities, bad management

Senior Software Developer (Current Employee) Hinxton, England (UK)

ProsVery pleasant campus, nice academic feel, excellent facilities, great people. Nice place for a short stint.

ConsNo career prospects, relatively poor salaries, managers who mostly don't want to be managers but have been promoted outside of their areas of expertise. The Peter Principle very much applies here.
