I have been working at Samsung Research America full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Fair salary, good benefits and good bonuses. Company brand name.

    Cons

Everything is urgent with no real tools or control to make a significant impact. Get things done, no matter how it's gets done. Obvious Korean preference if you wish to move up. No clear vision. Carousel of leadership. High turn over. No real innovation. Scared upper management, survival is the game for directors and up. No one high up the ladder wants to really innovate just duplicate. Those who do want to innovate have and will eventually leave. If your product becomes a success HQ will try to take it over and spit you out.

Lot's of chaos. Lot's of politics. Try to make progress while working in a spinning washing machine.

I have been working at Samsung Research America full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Pay. Worklife balance is good so far, but when HQ starts to pressure management (the way this project is going, they certainly will), the pressure will fall at the feet of the employees who will be expected to work 24/7 to achieve unrealistic goals and pull something miraculously working out of a tangled heap of disorganized mess.

    Cons

Totally chaotic. Can't make progress because people are stepping all over everyone else's feet. Infighting abounds. Managers don't have a clue of the technical details and thus make unrealistic and unreasonable requests and misguided assertions which requires worker's time to try to explain often to no avail--managers want stupid things done, thus stupid things must be done and when it isn't successful the workers will be blamed.

The IT department is a pain in the neck and the compute resources are crappy (ultra books [so called] that work like crap), constant connectivity outages, lack of flexibility in how you can setup your work environment.

Apple need not worry. This place is a mess.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire the current management and find a group of leaders that believe in making progress in a less chaotic politically driven environment and instead is driven by problem solving and information. Give people in the group a sense that this project is well organized and makes steady progress toward realistic goals.

I have been working at Samsung Research America full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The only "pro" I could think of, the reason why most people stay more than a few weeks at Samsung, is the salary. So unless you're really bendable and could accept crazy work conditions in the name of that good salary, Samsung is not for you.

    Cons

Everything else... Catastrophic managers, completely broken HR, management by fear and secrecy, company spying on your email and all electronic communications, "colleagues" reporting to management everything you say, complete inability to have any impact on Samsung products or projects because non-Koreans cannot dare having any influence on Koreans, Koreans stealing your inventions or documents under their name.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change things and people. Hard. Harder. Including yourself.

I have been working at Samsung Research America full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Great working hours
    Decent salary and bonuses
    Access to devices
Good overview of mobile industry and opportunity to talk to a lot of companies for collaboration

    Cons

HQ (Korea) still controls most things
Leadership is not as strong and visionary as it should be
Processes are broken with no clear roles and responsibilities as well as success metrics

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Hire a visionary leader
Reduce dependence on HQ for decision making

I have been working at Samsung Research America full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Relatively high pay
Brand name is considered important and successful
    Co-workers are very nice people

    Cons

The planning function is ridiculous. There are a team of young Koreans who attempt to lead the organization on behalf of an almost absent President. This is not a global company. It is a Korean company that is attempting something far beyond its capabilities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leadership is VERY important. The current President is essentially a manager. They also should stop getting rid of their successful leaders with strong personalities.
