    Pros

I have been here for a short while. The refocus initiative has been great and there is a sense of enthusiasm and high energy.

The team I am in really looks out for each and gives great flexibility innovate while setting achievable and realistic business goals.

    If I had to summarize

Energy, refocussed efforts on specific goals, compensation, ability to get software onto millions of devices, new wave of innovation, hiring top tier talent, flexibility to innovate

    Cons

    some internal tools, portals, processes

I have been working at Samsung Research America full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good benefits (Healthcare, 401K). Extremely intelligent and educated workforce.

    Cons

Constant change. Everything is run from Korea (HQ). Local efforts are often over looked. Extreme internal politics, constant high level reorganization. Lots of employee churn after the Samsung mystique wears off and talented staff run out of patience and find they can work anywhere else they like. No employee ownership/stock plan. One way communication with HQ, information shared in a need to know only fashion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fight for autonomy and embrace the silicon valley work environment.

    Pros

    Compensation, perks, challenging work

    Cons

Better management direction. Much of the research effort can be a little product-driven but much more focus can be directed at foundational, forward-thinking research.

I worked at Samsung Research America full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

This is specifically for Samsung UXCA/SDA in San Francisco
They pay you a lot of money.
The hours are very much 9-5.
    They have great recruiting.

    Cons

This is specifically for Samsung UXCA/SDA in San Francisco
You will never release a product in the market. They do not– and probably never will– have any support from headquarters in Korea to actually make products. They are either a tax loophole or an ideas factory that has no say in actual shipping products.
You will be asked to do redundant or nonsensical projects.
Leadership will constantly tell you what a great and unique position the lab is in.
Atmosphere is peculiar at best and toxic/poisonous at worst.
Any additional bonuses or compensation will have 2+ year vesting clauses that trap you once you realize you must escape.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop pretending everything is ok. 70% attrition is not normal.
Stop pushing out the creative leaders who don't agree with you.

    Pros

OK Money, no 12 hour days.

    Cons

Middle management gums things up. Big barrier between Korean bosses and US workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Anonymous round robin reviews. Hire the contractors so they have a stake in the company's performance.

I worked at Samsung Research America full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Samsung makes great products... This was an opportunity to work on a very good set of products for a well respected company. I absolutely have no regrets as far as working for Samsung. The people I worked with were awesome, and overall it was a very positive experience.

    Cons

There was a lot of political infighting amongst the different engineering groups. They would have "Brainstorming" meetings at times that were commonly referred to as "Blamestorming". The management could be quite difficult to work with at times, almost confrontational. Still, I would work for Samsung again in a second.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect and recognize those that contribute to your success... While I really liked my job, and the people I worked with, I frequently felt that I was not all that highly valued.

    Pros

Great flexible hours for college students and good pay. Good snacks and great staff members.

    Cons

For a contract worker, not many perks. Not many interactions with other employers, thought they were all very friendly.
