I have been working at Safeway

    Pros

The friendliness of fellow employees who express caring and sincerity amongst thier peers.

    Cons

Long hours, very poor quality of life, totally uncaring senior executives that are only interested in placating stockholders while coninually treating employees poorly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come and work a month in the trenches, you've completely lost touch with the reality of day to day issues within the workplace.

    Pros

I very much enjoy my team. The work is challenging and i work long hours but the experience is well worth it.

    Cons

Some of upper management have a few things to learn about managing people. Pay could also be a little better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please consider your people more of an asset then just people that work in the same building

Dealing with customers. Managers expect a lot from you. Pay raises don't come often enough.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

It's consistent, honest work. I really enjoy the independence. If you do you're job well, go above and beyond, show increases, create a good work environment for your employees and the store overall, no one bothers you. When they can tell you're passionate and sincere about what you're doing and you're good at it to boot, they trust you. That's been the best part. There's also a great work environment, which I'm sure varies from store to store, but in my experience the store is a big family that makes going to work really enjoyable.

    Cons

At the end of the day you're working for a giant grocery store chain, besides the moral issues with that (a story for another day) it also means lots of bogus meetings, programs, initiatives, and business jargon that clearly doesn't do much good. They're thinking of the company as a whole instead of treating each store individually. What works in one store may not work in another, I think they'd do well to realize that. You also aren't going to get any sympathy for having no private life and feeling like you're never really off the clock, you have to love this kind of work to be here, it will consume you.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

good work life balance. people are generally not too bad. the core values are good and down to earth, but it's been sort of offset by lack of leadership. it's easy if you just want to "get by".

    Cons

Lack of leadership and empowerment. Decisions are made up top by management that live in a bubble. The system is very inefficient. This causes us to waste our resources and make dumb mistakes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

don't be afraid and hide behind your mediocrity. Get out and say hello sometimes. open up to listen. get a reality check on what's going on and empower your people to do the right things for the company rather than for politics.

A good place to work. Great benefits. Opportunity to learn from lots of online training modules. Great potential to move up the ladder.
