I have been working at SGS full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Corporate culture is great. Lots of training available for everyone interested

    Cons

Jobs can become mechanical in the long run and career forward movement is staggering. Despite all the training attended, it doesn't always translate to a career. There's an invisible ceiling.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's a good idea to see the staff as more than just commodities that cost the company.

I have been working at SGS full-time

    Pros

Overall the company has a great... ummmmm.... logo, tag line, share price? Strong acquisition sense, for the most part. Corporate sets the plans, sometimes.

    Cons

Complete lack of training from the bottom to the top. I find it incomprehensible how a company that preaches Quality puts such little focus on actually investing in the Quality of their staff. Many employees are given a short orientation on Safety and HR and then it's off to the races. Very little is done to train and therefore retain high calibre staff.
The Company seems to, check that... does not effectively manage their sectors of business. The Company tends to treat macroeconomics as a non-entity of day to day operations therefore there is a strong disconnect of what reality is, which makes for ineffective planning leading to an unsustainable business. A strong guidance of "what is good for here is good for there" directs the local businesses into a failure mode.
I don't feel that any of the Senior Management understands the local businesses and therefore do not make comprehensible decisions. Money, as in all businesses, is the root cause of why everyone works and SGS is not a charity. Understanding the flow of the money and the "who, what, where, when and why" is imperative to all of the above statements. Even if on the local level this is gospel it is difficult for others far away from the trenches to understand.
"SGS is the World's Largest Testing, Inspection, Certification and Verification Company". Instead of focusing on being the biggest, focus on being the best.
    Compensation is average.
    Time-off is industry norm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to understand and HELP... YOU are the leaders, YOU are who the staff NEED to assist.. Stop listening to ask more questions in order to find scapegoats due to YOUR inability to effectively LISTEN and LEAD.

I worked at SGS as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Just has a name. Sometimes you can have nice co-workers there.

    Cons

Nothing to say. I have just bad memories of them. I don't advice to work there. Childish people work there. If you like to see bully, go there.
If you want to work more than regular hours for free, go there ...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please ask employees who fire or quite about the reason! Why they do not satisfied from your company.

    I worked at SGS full-time

    Pros

The people were friendly and new facility was ok

    Cons

Low pay as others have mentioned.
Managers don't know/care and are ineffective. Lots of ideas but no follow through on the managers part. Also new ideas tend to be frowned upon. To get ahead its all about favouritism.
Best advice is to leave when you get the chance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Provide a friendly and structured work environment for recent immigrants and young graduates. The routine and daily requirements change with seasonal layoffs and allows for a decent work-life balance when you get to transition temporary collect EI for a couple of months during the quiet season.

    Cons

Poor future growth. Poverty Wages working in the City of Vancouver area. Wage increases are measured in pennies, not dollars. Lots of stress in middle-management due to mid-life crisis or lack of upward mobility or wage growth. Definitely a top-down management style with a focus on costs and liabilities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide better retirement benefits and increase wages.

I have been working at SGS

    Pros

It's better than not having a job. The management will hardly acknowledge you, so you will have lots of time to search for new opportunities elsewhere. Keep your head down, don't mention any of the numerous inefficiencies, ignore the rampant politics, and you'll probably be able to stay employed until you find your new job. And I highly recommend that you do continue to look for a new job.

    Cons

Honestly, all of the reviews on here and Indeed are true. This company (Alberta especially) doesn't value quality - it's all about seniority and favouritism. Total lack of training, ethics and support. Don't expect any type of training or reliable communication from management - company has been restructured so all of the upper management employees have multiple roles causing massive problems with allocating proper attention to the operation of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The market is expanding and you WILL fail if you do not remain competitive, which you already are not. Not one other company charges overtime rates for three days a week and other companies actually have engineers onsite providing guidance to the technical staff (there is only one Employee that is actually a P. Eng in all of Alberta at SGS). If you were a contractor, would you hire the company that offers only two out of the ten services you need, charges more overtime than any of your competition do and sends a brand new tech (who may or may not know how to do their job/communicate in English well)? Grab the buckets cause your ship is going down fast.

Former Employee - Lab Tech in Lakefield, ON

I worked at SGS full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - many good people to work with
    - some supervisors were very accommodating for time off/ shift change requests for work/life
      balance
    - appropriate PPE on hand, hearing testing available on occasion
    - enough to learn when first starting out

    Cons

    - limited options/ difficult to move laterally/ up the ladder within the company
    - after a year or two there may not be enough continuous learning
    - employees cut corners affecting quality, safety
    - sometimes a lack of communication between levels

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lab tech wages could always be higher, especially considering the hazards encountered on a daily basis. Sometimes jobs could be quoted with an unrealistically short time frame. Lab supplies were not always stocked up fast enough, a lack of back up equipment could lead to delays.
