Former Employee - Store Manager in Atlanta, GA (US)

I worked at Ross Stores full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

45 hour work week for salaried managers. 20 percent discount everyday. 40 percent discount quarterly! The stock is light compared to other retailers who sit on a lot of freight. Everything must be processed and put out daily, carryover is not tolerated.

    Cons

Too much politics going on. If you have been in the company over 7 years, look out, you might be replaced. Also if you are promoted from the inside, you are not going much of an increase in pay which is sad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company has done a fairly decent job in valuing the associates but can improve on Valuing their managers. Also
when promoting from within, give management the same compensation that you would offer an external hire.

Current Employee - Store Protection Specialist in Lafayette, LA (US)

I have been working at Ross Stores full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    Reasonable starting rate
    Easy work
Don't have to assist with all the mess on sales floor
Full time benefits after 90 days

    Cons

    Long hours for full time
Can be boring; Required to stand in front of store 100%
    Management unorganized

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maybe allow SPS to browse sales floor a couple times during shift. Employee satisfaction is important. If employees are bored and unmotivated, there will be high turnover

    Pros

Yoir the leader as the mobile sps. You get to roam the store and monitor activity.

    Cons

Note taking is rediculous in the manner they expect. They slow your eyes down and are a distraction

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less notes and better trainimg would help

Current Employee - Loss Prevention Store Lead in Jersey City, NJ (US)

I have been working at Ross Stores full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    Friendly associates and management

Good hours and flexibility with schedule even as full-time

Great advancement, started as temp for summer, moved to part time stock, then back-up sps, to part time sps, to full time sps all in 6 months with a raise or two along the way.

Get to have set schedule as full-time

    Decent benefits

Almost no discord between management or associates

Meet new customers/people in general , everyday in a relaxed environment

    Cons

    Very strict policies and procedures

Some stores have a lot of theft

    Could pay a little better

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give the part time associates who are willing to work their 25 hours before deciding to hire extra people. If you have 40 part time associates they can only get about 10 hours each! Why not 20 that can get 20 hours each who then feel more incentive to do a TRUE job and continue striving to succeed..

I have been working at Ross Stores full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Most of the employees are very friendly, Many different people from other countries visit this store, you get paid bi weekly.

    Cons

There's not a lot of opportunities for advancement, If you're only an associate you basically get used so the store manager can get a bonus, you never really get the hours you're supposed to unless you're an area supervisor or manager.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take better care of your employees especially if the shrink is down & the revenue is up.

Current Employee - Front End Supervisor in Tucson, AZ (US)

I have been working at Ross Stores part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Very flexible schedules and depending on who you work with, it can be an enjoyable work environment. You can work either long hours or shorter shifts if you need to.

    Cons

Poor management depending on which branch you work at. Some area supervisors are not very nice. A lot of associates are only interested in doing what's in their job description and nothing else so it's hard to build a sense of loyalty for the company. Loss prevention specialists get paid more to do a lot less than sales associates. Full time benefits don't kick in for years.

I have been working at Ross Stores full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Work life balance was amazing here. They give you a lot of extra time off as a full time employee (birthday, anniversary, etc). Expectations were realistic and there was a lot of structure, so you always knew what you were supposed to be focusing on. A lot of focus on internal promotions.

    Cons

There was a lot of favoritism and HR department didn't back management enough.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This was a great company to work for. There was a lot of favoritism and DM/ALPM's in role that shouldn't have been. The way that I was treated was why I left and it is a shame because it was a great , just did not like current District leadership team.
