Current Employee – been working at Red Cross full-time

ProsWorked with very experienced professionals. Great benefits. The entire leadership team has put lots of investment in modernizing the entire brand and workplace.

ConsYou can always experience long hours during a disaster, but this is nothing new. Also, as a nonprofit, you know it's going to be difficult to offer competitive salaries.

Former Employee – worked at Red Cross full-time for more than a year

ProsRed Cross has a caring, concerned workforce. The atmosphere varies greatly by location and is very dependent on the personality of the Regional CEO.

ConsRed Cross changes organization structure at an astounding pace. This leads to poor "buy-in" and less than effective management.

Advice to Senior ManagementStick with a plan longer than 6 months to one year- You may be surprised at the positive outcome.

Washington, DC (US)

Current Employee – been working at Red Cross full-time for more than a year

Pros- Work is fulfilling and most of the employees are passionate about what we do
- A lot of opportunities for hanging out inside and outside of work
- Cheap gym membership and social sports groups (running, volleyball, softball)
- Flexible options for telecommuting

Cons- Pay is not great
- Professional growth is limited unless you want to try new things outside of your job details; you can generally only get promoted if someone above you leaves
- Meetings (in-person and virtual) clog up a lot of work hours
- Some departments act like separate organizations

Advice to Senior ManagementGet more creative with inspiring inter-department collaboration and growth/professional development opportunities to reward innovation.

New York, NY (US)

Former Employee – worked at Red Cross full-time for more than a year

ProsVery prestigious organization with over 100 years of experience. Tends to bring out the best in some and the worst in others. The work that the organization does is great and they always put the clients first. Very dedicated employees.

ConsVery low pay and at times compensation does not match experience or education or living area. No procedures for removing non-performing employees leaving everyone else stuck cleaning up the mess. No exit planning, if someone decided to walk away today all of their knowledge and skills are gone too.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork on promoting from within don't rely on hiring from the outside. You need people who understand the culture and feel of a non-profit organization. Work harder to keep volunteers engaged on the local level. It's always easy to find people looking to work on national operations, but the ones who are local, especially in big cities tend to be forgotten or not engaged enough. Try to focus on volunteer management by volunteer leadership that would help a lot. Give VRD support to do these things don't bog them down.
