Nice ideas but some poor middle management

Manager (Current Employee)
Calgary, AB

I have been working at PwC full-time for more than 5 years

ProsLooks good on your resume. Good place to make connections. A few terrific people. Hidden gems.

ConsSoft skills carry no importance here so some really poor middle managers get away with treating their staff appallingly. Everyone knows it and silently accepts it. Compensation is misleading, potential bonuses are inflated when they hire you and the reality is a little different. Don't expect compensation like you will get at other places in Calgary.

Advice to Senior ManagementRequire managers to be decent people. Discipline or terminate people who are repeat offenders of poor or abusive treatment of their staff. Stop ignoring people who bring their concerns forward.

Like any accounting firm, they ask a lot from you and give little in return but the experience of a big 4 is invaluable.

Prosgreat hands on experience. seniors are very supportive and the culture was positive and cheerful. pay was good compared with other competitors. great firm reputation.

Consvery hard to get through the recruitment. once at work, you are busy with lots of repetitive jobs assigned by seniors.

Putting your life aside for a few years

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at PwC

ProsExperience in a Big 4 will give you more opportunities elswhere (unless you don't have a personal life in which case you may stay)

ConsAbsolute lack of work/life balance consideration. They'll make you work 80 hours a week and you'll end up coming home desparate and crying. You might even lose your significant other because you'll get fat (no time to eat well or hit gym), you'll look bad (puffy eyes) and mentally unstable. And don't think you'll get compensated for those extra hours: they'll adjust you salary only if your annual rate falls below minimum wage (this might very well happen!).

Advice to Senior ManagementChange your business model and care for your empoyees! No one should ever have to work all nights and week-ends this is simply unacceptable and unsustainable. Make sure you employees have time to take care of their health, relationships and you might keep good employees over the long term (and won't end up with lifeless robots as managers and associates). Expecting the same workload to be done despite annual layoffs WILL make you fall, it's just a matter of time...

ProsGood compensation and caring staff. My boss really cared about the well bring of all his staff.

ConsBeing in Internal Firm Services, I felt a bit ostracized from the accountants.

Decent but pay is low

Senior Associate (Current Employee)
Toronto, ON

I have been working at PwC full-time for more than 3 years

Pros- great brand- good to have on resume
- great people and atmosphere as they are in the same age group
- good place to start and develope leadership skills

Cons- work life balance is non existent (although advertised differently)
- firm does not really care about employees (start cost cutting at expense of employee morale)
- all about partners and just of all team meetings are how we should work harder to make them more money while our salaries are at a freeze (actually decreased since prior year in comparable position)
- performance evaluations don't matter- ratings and promotions are dependent on who you know/suck up to (very political)
