I have been working at Publix part-time for more than a year

    Pros

You're definitely going to improve your communication skills here. After a few short weeks, you'll begin to see yourself become bolder and less shy around strangers. If you work hard, and by Publix's definition of working hard, I mean just doing what you're told to do and learning the ropes very quickly, you'll be moved up fast. I was promoted to the Cashier position after 4 short months from being a Bagger. And depending on the availability at your store, you can be moved to the front office in a few months after that if you get cashiering down quick enough.
Also, the company is privately owned by its employees, and the stock is constantly going up. So the longer you stay at Publix, the more money you'll make back. This is a great place to work when you're in high school or getting through college. Also, if you get a real job later on, you can work here once a month and still own stock. So after say 40 years of working your other job and here once a month, you're gonna have a very good retirement plan.

    Cons

The short term benefits are nearly non-existent. You start at $8 an hour (or slightly above minimum wage if it changes), and every 6 months you get an evaluation. If you do okay-well you'll get a 25 cent raise. If you do excellent you'll only get a 50 cent raise. So getting up to the higher wages takes a very long time, but it is a retail store so you can't really complain.
Also, you don't get discounts on food or anything. They give out Publix coupons to employees only every 2-3 months or so for a free item, usually ice cream or deli, or produce. Another way you can get free stuff, is if a customer tells your manager you did a great job or something awesome, then you get a customer compliment card. Which will either get you a free 6 inch sub (every time) OR a random free item which changes every few months, such as a bunch of donuts or cookies or ice cream.
Training is very easy, you get to watch videos on the clock. It's the best part of the job because there are no customers around.
As for the culture, well, hard work is valued. The harder you work, the more hours you'll get, the more your bosses will like you and the better chances you'll have at getting a promotion or higher raise.

All in all, no real complaints, its a retail job at a grocery store, you get what you apply for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Publix is honestly one of the best places to work, keep up the good work and don't be afraid to get your hands dirty with the customers on a regular basis.

Do not hide in your offices.

Be sure to be friendly with all the associates, if you're friendly to them, they'll listen to you easier and feel more inclined to helping out around the store.

I have been working at Publix part-time

    Pros

Stable, growing company that can offer upward mobility if you can land full time employment. Benefits are solid, and leadership does a decent job.

    Cons

All the young employees seem to think they are managers, but lack the communication skills necessary to deal with coworkers at times. Can be an excessive amount of negative talk from both younger and older employees alike.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train full timers to understand basics of communications, and create a more structured training program that allows for employees that are looking to advance to get educated.

I worked at Publix part-time for more than a year

    Pros

The people were friendly and the schedule was very flexible. They're great at working with busy schedules, especially for students.

    Cons

Not really anything concerning the company. Dealing with people can have its typical downsides with certain experiences, but overall it's a great entry-level job.

I have been working at Publix part-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Great people
    Good pay for college students
    Flexible schedules
    Great management
    Constant raises
    Career opportunities
Stock options (a while down the road)
Great benefits even for part-time workers.

    Cons

You're going to deal with annoying people, but that's expected in any retail job.
It takes a long time to advance
Full time employees are rare, and only sometimes deserving. Management tends to go by years rather than merit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If someone is doing an absolutely excellent job, consider giving them full time, or helping them advance.
If you can determine that someone is serious about advancing in your company, you need to help them do so, rather than sit back and wait for time to pass.

I have been working at Publix full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Benefits
    Publix Stock
    Family Atmosphere
    Good Bonusees
Management cares and wants you to succeed.
Interacting with customers everyday and providing them with the premier customer service they've come to expect.

    Cons

Pay is on the low side.
    Moving up can be difficult.
FL has so many stores that not much expansion is going on so new positions don't open up as often. Only when someone steps down\ retires does it seem movement happens lately.
Once you go Full-time you don't get a set schedule which for some that like to plan things around knowing when their off days will be can be difficult.

I worked at Publix full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

If your willing to work hard you can get into management pretty quick. Depending on experience 1-3 years.

    Cons

learning the ins and outs can take some time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to listen and value the associates not as a means to get the job done but as part owners in the company. Publix is an employee owned compamy.

I worked at Publix full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Clean, safe friendly working environment. Opportunity to make friends with co-workers and customers. Fantastic stock options. They try to work around your hours. Good insurance options. Great career opportunity. I all ways got a raise and a bonus.

    Cons

Depending on the department you work in, it is hard work. You have to go in and out of coolers and freezers, and be able to lift up to 50Lbs. This is hard on your body.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For those of you that do not work along side of the staff when needed, you need to do so. For the many leaders that do, I congratulate you!
