I have been working at Pfizer full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Competitive Salary, health benefits, given more vacation the longer you stay with the company. Opportunity to do secondments in other departments (if your manager approves)

    Cons

Colleagues are let go often, the usual unstable pharmaceutical business issues. Depending on your level 15-20% of your salary is held back and if you perform well it's given to you as a "bonus". However, if you do well, and the company performs well then you get your % plus a little extra.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HR really needs to look at years of service, and respect people. Newer people getting hired with higher salary demotivates existing people, and in turn is bad for the company. Employees being punished for sticking with the company. All managers says it is a HR policy that restricts them from promoting their existing best talent.

I worked at Pfizer full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Not a lot of hours, not a lot work-responsibility stress. People claimed they worked long hours, but the parking lot seemed pretty empty at 8am and at 6pm.

    Cons

Stress about whether you were going to have a job through the endless rounds of layoffs. It was unclear what exactly got someone promoted. In a big, functionally-oriented company, it was hard to see how your contribution really made a difference. With the rapid growth in the 1990s, the mergers, and the endless rounds of downsizing, there is absolutely no authentic culture left. Just a bunch of folks who are passing through.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seriously, stop buying other companies. Trying running the company well. But I guess it is easier to merge with another huge company, fire a bunch of people, and pretend that you have wrung cost savings out of the business. Doing less with less people is not "cost savings."

    Pros

    Scale
    Very professional work environment
    Dedicated employees
    Worthwhile mission

    Cons

Upheaval - non stop acquisitions and restructuring. Considerable layoffs

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on a few critical initiatives and grow by developing your own drugs instead of buying them.

I have been working at Pfizer full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Working at Pfizer was not stressful, reasonable hours, not a lot of pressure to accomplish something every single day

    Cons

Because there wasn't a lot of pressure, if you wanted to actually move fast and accomplish something, it was hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Typical big corporation where someone who happened to be in the right place at the right time would get promoted. But not necessarily because they were particularly good at their job. This hinders the respect they have from subordinates and limits the subordinates development.

Experience with good research and great colleagues damaged by frequent restructuring, changing priorities and M&A .

I worked at Pfizer full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I was a scientist at the bench who found lots of challenge, personally fulfilling research and excellent resources (equipment budget, reagents) for work. My immediate colleagues were great co-workers with a sense of team.

    Cons

Developing a product that requires several years to market is impossible with when reprioritizing, restructuring and site closures occur every six months. There was churn in the personnel in upper management and there was lack of clarity of research goals in middle management. There was little opportunity for career growth for scientists within the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a strategy and leadership team. Then stick with it for several years. Otherwise it's impossible to tell what the 'results' of the strategy are. If workers report that their management is erratic or ineffective, listen those comments and take action.
